The last scholarship for the month of June is the Ada Crooker Scholarship.

The Ada Crooker Scholarship was established in Ada’s memory by her daughters – Jane Smith and Sue Norvell.

The award is given to an Auburn high school graduate majoring in business.

Crooker graduated from Auburn High School in 1928 and then furthered her education at Peru State College and the University of Nebraska. She worked as a legal secretary. Later, she assumed duties in her father’s real estate business and was active in the business for many years.

She was active in the Brownville Historical Society, the Nemaha Country Democratic Party, and was a long-time member of the Auburn Country Club where she served on the board and was the first woman to be elected as president of that organization.

This individual was a student-athlete who was the assistant editor for the student newspaper and had an interesting column in each issue.

He played baseball for the Bobcats!!

We apologize for not having posted for a couple of weeks, but we are back with some Fun Fact Friday information about Peru State College.

This post is about the author of the College's sesquicentennial book - Dan Sullivan.

Sullivan grew up in Omaha and has degrees from UNL and Creighton. He spent more than 40 years at the Omaha World-Herald in editing roles and has edited more than 20 books on a variety of topics.

He was tasked with the opportunity to write Nebraska's First College - Shaping the Future Since 1967!

Ironically, the book was published nine years ago and still is a great read on Peru State's history.

This week's scholarship posting is the Dr. J.W. Crabtree Scholarship.

The Crabtree Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. Eunice Crabtree in memory of her father, Dr. J.W. Crabtree, who served as President of Peru State College from 1904 to 1910.

The scholarship is awarded to a fulltime student.

Crabtree, class of 1887, was the first Peru State normal graduate to head the school, the first to be primarily known as “president” and the first to be clean-shaven. Construction projects taken on during his tenure are still standing today.

He later served as Nebraska’s state superintendent of public instruction and as president of Wisconsin State Normal at River Falls, which has a dormitory named in his honor.

Crabtree was executive secretary of the National Education Association from 1917 to 1934 and was highly regarded for keeping the group together during a period of conflict between teachers and administrators. Upon his death in 1945, the editor of the National Education Association Journal called him “a great leader, a combination of Horace Mann and Abraham Lincoln.”

Bobcat Women’s Golf Hosting Scramble June 27 - It's not to late to register!!!!

The Peru State women’s golf team will be hosting a four-person scramble on Saturday, June 27, at The Golf Club at Table Creek in Nebraska City.

Registration for the event begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

The cost is $400 per team with the entry fee including 18 holes of golf, carts, and lunch. Teams can purchase mulligans (four for $20 or eight for $40) and skins for $20 per team.

There will be flight prizes, hole prizes, raffles, and a silent auction. In addition, there will be a special raffle for a Callaway Elyte 7 Wood which is valued at $299. Tickets will be one for $10, three tickets for $20, or $10 tickets for $50. You need not be present to win.

All proceeds from the tournament benefit the Bobcat women’s golf team.

This individual became the Director of Intramurals for the 1985-86 school year at Peru State College.

Later she became the head volleyball coach. Does anyone remember who she is?

The first scholarship information for the month of June is the Luke and Shirley Coniglio Scholarship.

The family of the late Luke and Shirley Coniglio endowed a scholarship fund in their memory to forever provide financial assistance to students pursuing their education at Peru State College.

Their four children created the Luke and Shirley Coniglio Education Endowed Scholarship with a gift to the Peru State College Foundation in support of education students. Their four children include Cheryl (Coniglio) Petty, Chris Coniglio, Mark Coniglio and Mary Coniglio.

Peru State College will select recipients of the Coniglio Scholarship. Teacher education majors who have demonstrated financial need and/or outstanding academic achievement are eligible for the scholarship.

Luke was born in Omaha, went to Creighton University, and graduated as a pharmacist. Shirley Ann (Seewald) Coniglio was born in San Bernadino, California. Although her family had limited resources, she was determined to go to college. Shirley attended College of Saint Mary in Omaha to be a certified medical technologist.

Shirley and Luke Coniglio met in 1953 and were married after he returned from serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Does anyone from the 1976 time frame remember the name of this band which performed for Spring Week Festivities? Hint: It is a name of a fruit and a season! :)

The final scholarship featured in May is the Clements Band Scholarship.

Leroy and Nancy Redfern established the Samuel L. & Hattie P. Clements Scholarship to honor Samuel Clements who launched and directed the Peru State College Band.

Samuel Clements was the superintendent of the former Peru Prep school from 1926-53 and was an active promoter of the Prep school music program during his lifetime. The Redferns noted that participating in the band with the trips to contests and fairs added an important dimension to their lives.

The first winner of the scholarship which was first offered in 1994 was Tiffany Holmes of Watson, Mo. A flutist, Holmes presented “Performing Sonata No. 3” by Handel for the juried scholarship. Steven Rumbaugh of Falls City won the scholarship in 1996 after performing “Allegro” by Scarlatti and “Danza” by Durante on the trumpet.
