The second scholarship for the month of September is the Phyllis Davidson Memorial & Davidson Estate Scholarship.

The Phyllis Davidson Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Phyllis who served as Professor of Women’s Physical Education from 1929-1956 at Peru State College. The Phyllis Davidson Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. Lois Christensen, a 1948 graduate, for Ms. Davison in honor of her establishing the Peru State High School Volleyball Tournament. The Davidson Estate Scholarship was established in memory of Phyllis by her brother Hobart.

Some highlights for Ms. Davidson included helping Peru State student Leota Jung to prepare for the 1940 Olympics in the high jump. Unfortunately, the 1940 Games were canceled because of WWII.

Ms. Davidson was the organizer of the girls’ high school volleyball tournament which started in 1946 with 20 teams. The tournament for more than 25 years would be the equivalent of the state tournament until the sport was officially sanctioned by the Nebraska School Activities Association. During that time, Peru’s gymnasium would serve the community beyond the hilltop, as a site for advancement of girls’ sports. During several tournaments in the 60’s, over 30 teams competed filling the old gym – now the present library.

The scholarships are awarded either to volleyball players or physical education majors.

In the fall of 1986, the dirt flew during formal groundbreaking ceremonies for the PSC Student Center expansion/renovation project. These three individuals were the first to move some dirt! Two of the three are still with us! Can you identify any or all three who were important figures for the College?

Following Henry Straight as Peru Normal's next principal was A.D. Williams, who served one year in 1871-72.

Williams, a graduate of Hamilton College in New York, was a clergyman of the Free Will Baptist Church who came to Peru after serving as president of West Virginia University and as superintendent of public instruction for the State of West Virginia.

The State Board of Education had sought a principal who was "board in knowledge, wise in dealing with students, elevated in his ideals of life and strong to impress on the life and character of his pupils."

Unfortunately, Williams was away from Peru while getting his family settled and was forced to fun a school diminished by illnesses among faculty members. The board removed him after one year, and he moved to Adams County, Nebraska, where he later founded the Kenesaw Times.

The first scholarship for the month of September is the Dennis Curtis Scholarship.

Dennis part of the 1960’s Peru State graduate group who are fiercely loyal to the College. He was not on the football team but was an athletic trainer for the team.

Dennis still attends home football games and drops by many basketball games as well. Dennis established the scholarship to promote Peru State College to Elkhorn High School students and as a way of giving back to Peru State. Dennis credits Peru State with helping him find his love of teaching.

The Curtis scholarship goes to an incoming freshman from Elkhorn High School who has been involved in school activities.

The Bobcat marching band was revived in 1974 and flourished for several years under the direction of whom? This photo is of the 1976 band as they practiced to get ready for the 1976 fall marching season!

If you know who the band director who came in the 70's and brought the marching band back to life was, comment below!

When McKenzie had left, another strong leader emerged at Peru Normal when Eliza Morgan joined Peru as preceptress. While her role included teaching literature, rhetoric and history, her greater impact might have been in shaping the college experience for the school's young women.

Morgan started by turning the sparsely decorated dormitory rooms into pleasant homes for the girls.

"When Miss Morgan took charge of the ladies' dormitory," McKenzie later wrote, "it was in a decidedly plain, not to say rough, condition. The rooms were poorly furnished."

"Her first thought was to secure at slight expense, rugs or carpet, or oilcloth for the floor."

Morgan ran a tight ship and expected her girls to care as much about their accommodations as she did! And they did!

The last scholarship to be posted for the month of August is the Ada Crooker Scholarship.

The Ada Crooker Scholarship was established in Ada’s memory by her daughters – Jane Smith and Sue Norvell.

It is awarded to an Auburn High School graduate majoring in business.

Crooker graduated from Auburn High School in 1928 and then furthered her education at Peru State College and the University of Nebraska. She worked as a legal secretary. Later, she assumed duties in her father’s real estate business and was active in the business for many years.

She was active in the Brownville Historical Society, the Nemaha Country Democratic Party, and was a long-time member of the Auburn Country Club where she served on the board and was the first woman to be elected as president of that organization.
