Few programs at Penn resonate more strongly with Penn Cinema Studies' commitment to local and global engagement and integrated knowledge. As thoroughly hybrid media that intersect in rich and various ways with photography, painting, drawing, music, and literature, film and video demand an interdisciplinary course of study. Therefore, the Penn Cinema Studies curriculum draws on a rich pool of facul

ty and offers courses covering a range of national, historical and methodological approaches. Feel free to drop by our offices to make an appointment with the director or associate director to discuss your interests in Cinema Studies at Penn, or to watch one of the many films in our extensive DVD library. Attend our regular colloquia, which are open to students and the general public alike, and feature outstanding local, national and international film and media scholars presenting the very latest research in the field. We look forward to meeting you!

Citizens of Myanmar Talk About the Recent Coup

On February 1, 2021, Myanmar’s military staged a coup. They declared a state of emergency, seized power, nullified the recent election, and imprisoned the country’s democratically elected leaders. They also stifled communication, barring foreign journalists and cutting off internet access. Dozens, if not hundreds, of Burmese citizens have been jailed, imprisoned, and killed in pro-democracy protests in the weeks since.

This panel will feature 3-4 diverse voices from citizens of Myanmar, who will talk candidly about what they have experienced and witnessed firsthand.

Moderators:
Peter Decherney, Director, Filmmaking for Democracy in Myanmar
Ansley Sawyer, Co-Director and Executive Producer, Like We Don’t Exist

A new article by CIMS professor Peter Decherney and Caroline Levander (Rice U) in their series on education and Covid-19. This one argues that college is about what happens in between classes. And we need to figure out how to bring that online too (whatever the fall brings).

Is re-creating the space in between classes necessary to keep university communities alive?
