For Jefferson finance students John Sexton and Stone Campbell, success isn’t limited to the classroom or the soccer field. As student-athletes and co-founders of Northline Digitals, they’re already applying business principles to help companies grow while building their own entrepreneurial venture.

The pair’s journey reflects the Jefferson School of Business mission of combining experiential learning, innovation and real-world problem-solving to prepare students for impactful careers.

For Cancer Immunotherapy Month, we’re highlighting an unlikely research partnership that could expand the reach of CAR-T therapy.

Drs. Adam Snook and Mỹ G. Mahoney came together from two distinct fields: cancer immunotherapy and the biomedical applications of skin biology. Their collaboration brings a complementary approach to tackling two of CAR-T therapy’s biggest challenges:

👩‍🔬One is expanding CAR-T to treat a wider range of solid tumors that the therapy doesn’t currently target effectively.

👨‍🔬The other is improving access, as current approaches, time and high costs limit the number of patients who can receive this potentially life-saving treatment.

The goal is to develop a scalable treatment in which a single donor can produce enough CAR-T cells for many recipients. And this team believes they’ve come up with a potential solution.

Throughout the summer, we’ll highlight student internships—a key part of the Jefferson experience. First up is finance major Leonell Aguilar, who’s interning at Braatz Wealth Advisors, a wealth management and financial planning firm in Marlton, N.J.

Some of his responsibilities include researching financial topics, such as retirement accounts, pensions, Social Security and tax-efficient investment strategies; organizing client and seminar attendee data; and supporting the planning and ex*****on of educational seminars for clients and prospective clients.

“Combining school and the real world has given me a deeper understanding of wealth management, retirement planning, portfolio construction, investment analysis and client relationships,” says Aguilar, noting that the internship has built his networking skills as well. “This experience allows me to apply concepts from my finance coursework in a professional environment while gaining valuable exposure to the day-to-day operations of a wealth management firm. I absolutely love learning about what they do there.”

When nonprofit leaders across Philadelphia gathered at Jefferson this spring for the first SPARK Innovation Academy cohort graduation, the celebration marked more than the completion of a nine-week program. It represented a growing collaboration between Jefferson and the City of Philadelphia Government to help organizations solve complex challenges through innovation, systems thinking and technology.

Developed through a partnership with the city’s Office of Innovation and Technology, the SPARK Innovation Academy brought together nonprofit professionals to strengthen problem-solving, communication and technology skills they can apply directly within their organizations. The inaugural cohort of 20 participants graduated in March after working through collaborative workshops focused on design thinking, stakeholder engagement, data visualization, survey design and emerging technologies such as AI.

“The goal was to combine design thinking and systems thinking with technology adoption in a way that helps participants improve processes and communication within their organizations,” says Jefferson’s Dr. Jeffrey Klemens.

SPARK graduate Jasmin Velez, with Kensington Corridor Trust, participated to strengthen her communication and storytelling skills and learn how technology could help streamline her work on a small nonprofit team. “Having several weeks to share our experiences, lessons learned and challenges really made this a fruitful experience,” she says.
