A surgeon, artist, innovator, mentor, and true Jefferson legend. Alumnus Dr. Gerald “Jerry” Marks ’49 spent a century making an impact on medicine and the lives of those around him.

A pioneer in colore**al surgery, Dr. Marks transformed re**al cancer treatment, championed emerging technologies such as the flexible fiber-optic colonoscope, and helped shape the future of minimally invasive surgery. He was also an accomplished watercolorist, producing some of his finest work well into his 90s.

“My dad loved the phrase, ‘shake the tree of tradition,’ and that’s what he did,” says his son and Sidney Kimmel Medical College alumnus Dr. John Marks ’89.

Dr. Marks’ legacy lives on through the patients he helped, the surgeons he mentored, and the countless lives he touched. We remember the remarkable Renaissance man who showed us that medicine, at its best, can be both science and art.

Jefferson recently welcomed nearly 1,000 undergraduates from 23 states and 26 countries, from as far away as the Philippines. The class also features four sets of twins and some 270 students from Philadelphia, including Central High School grad Bryce Gooden.

The Marketing major enters Jefferson with a longtime love of the entertainment industry. Gooden’s TikTok, which focuses on books, TV, and movies, has nearly 20,000 followers.

The Thomas Jefferson University Bicentennial Scholarship recipient hopes to work at a major studio, combining his passion for storytelling, branding, and consumer engagement. Gooden believes attending Jefferson, with its small class size and industry-connected faculty, will help him get there.

“You can actually talk to them about internships and their experiences in the field and build professional connections,” he says.

A major milestone for prostate cancer research: Investigators from Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health’s Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Jefferson have received an $8.2 million National Cancer Institute (NCI) Program Project Grant to advance research on neuroendocrine prostate cancer — the first NCI P01 for prostate cancer led by a Jefferson principal investigator.

Headed by Dr. Lucia Languino, the multidisciplinary team will investigate how this aggressive, treatment-resistant cancer develops, spreads, and evades the immune system, paving the way for new therapies and better patient outcomes.

For alumna Dr. Shanda McManus, medicine and personal loss have been intertwined throughout her life. Her passion for medicine began at a young age, as she helped care for her mother through a battle with ovarian cancer. Years later, as a first-year medical student at Jefferson, Dr. McManus experienced the loss of her younger brother, Monir, and carried her grief for over three decades. Through intimate letters to her brother, she found a way to process that loss and tell his story — work that became her debut memoir, “Brother Epistles.”

This month, Dr. McManus returns to Jefferson for “Bearing Witness to Loss from Inside a White Coat,” the opening event of the 2026-27 Jefferson Humanities Forum. Join her for a conversation about grief, memory, medicine, and the human stories behind loss:
