Hey,

I was just looking through some old files and found a list of advice I wished I had had when I was a younger ID student.

Here it is, these are some of my thoughts but not universal truths so feel free to ignore as much of it as you wish.

1) Karma is real, it is not controlled by some higher power, but rather by people being decent and civilized to each other. Say yes to everything you can and it will come back in good time.
2) A portfolio is a living document, Update it constantly and seek out advice from other people.
3) There is nothing more important than your network. Work on that even more than your portfolio.
4) Take risks and go with your gut. If you are passionate about something you will be more likely to make it a reality.
5) Never work on only one thing. Side projects are often more valuable than school work.
6) Keep your computer organized and backup your files. There is nothing worse than losing work when technology breaks.
7) Document everything, you might need to reference it later. One of the greatest things about smartphones is that you always have a camera in your pocket, so use it.
8) Challenge is healthy. Work to your strengths, but don’t ignore what is hard for you.
9) Make s**t and break s**t. CAD is cool and all but there is nothing more real than reality.
10) No matter how busy you are there is always time for a couple beers with friends. Talking to one another is important dinner and brews are both good venues for talking about what’s on your mind.
11) All-nighers are inevitable, but if you pull them early rather than the night before your final critique you will have much more success.

Sorry for not being a better IDSA leader last year. I hope someone steps up and does a better job than me this coming school year.

Hope all is well.

High Five,

-Coby

We have a compost bucket in the studio. It is located under the table with the electric kettle. Feel free to use both.

Your professors will tell you that having a good network is important. If you take their advice on anything, have it be that.

This goes out to all the underclassmen. It has taken me almost four years to learn this.

If you are going to stay up all night working on a project do it two or three nights before the due date not on the night before.

Who wants to volunteer to make soup tomorrow? Ingredients are on the table and in the fridge. It is really easy, I promise.

A little over a year ago a professor asked me to please make my desk look less like a kitchen and more like a work environment. This week we have had 6 different student chefs cooking meals for the studio on what used to be my desk and is now the official studio kitchen. The same professor who asked me to clean the cooking implements off my desk loves the transformation. I consider this one of the greatest successes of the last year.

Soup consumption has an average rate of about 16quarts/hour for the first day. Donations have been awesome so far. Keep 'em coming.

Stay hungry sprinters!

People are saying that the stew needs spices, so if you were wondering what to bring in NOW YOU KNOW.

Remember that Sprint Fuel is BYOBowl, and coffee is BYOCup.Suggested donation is $1.

PhilaU IDSA is getting ready for SPRINT by cooking up some soup. We are hoping the pots keep cooking all week but we will need your help. The first installment of veggies was donated by the IDSA seniors but we can't sustain this on our own. If you like free food please donate vegetables or money for the FUEL fund.

Soup can be found in the senior studio starting tonight at 6:30.

Thanks,

IDSA

PS, there is coffee too starting at 3:00 pm.

Thinking about Stew-D-Oh soon. Is anyone interested in presenting? Soup suggestions?

Also maybe a studio yard sale this semester.
