📣CALL FOR PAPERS: Architecture and Mobility in Early Modern Tuscany

International Workshop - Friday, 5 February 2027 - The Medici Archive Project, Palazzo Alberti, Florence

Fifty years after the publication of Giorgio Spini’s seminal Architettura e politica da Cosimo I a Ferdinando I, the Medici Archive Project is organizing a workshop addressing the interpenetration between building practices and state-building during the Medici grand duchy, with a specific emphasis on how investments in infrastructure facilitated and/or regulated the mobility of people, commodities, material culture, and intelligence in the stato vecchio and the stato nuovo. Especially welcome are papers that shed light on how civil engineering works—such as roads, canals, ports, river harbors, bridges, fortifications, dams, gates, post houses, staging inns, aqueducts, and custom houses—served as vehicles of communication, and how these networks fundamentally shaped the political success and economic progress of Medici Tuscany. Also relevant will be contributions reflecting on the creation of urban spaces specifically designated for the reception of mobility, including squares, markets, gardens, pharmacies, libraries, and neighborhoods (such as the Jewish Ghetto and the German quarter in Florence and the “foreign” settlements in Livorno and Pisa). Ideally, this workshop will begin to chart the critical topographies and infrastructure that defined the history of circulation throughout the Tuscan territory.

This initiative marks the first of four academic events dedicated to Medici architecture and urban planning. Concurrently, it feeds into a long-term research project that will culminate in an exhibition on the Medici and global news networks, tentatively entitled “How the Medici Came to Know about the World” (October 12, 2028 — January 12, 2029).

The organizers invite proposals for 20-minute unpublished papers in English or Italian, and especially those that take interdisciplinary approaches engaging architectural history, art history, archaeology, history, urban studies, landscape studies, and material culture.

The Society for Renaissance Studies' next conference takes place 30 June to 3 July 2027, here in the Warburg Institute in Bloomsbury. The Call for Papers closes on 25 September 2026.

'The Renaissance beyond Borders' envisions the Renaissance as a dynamic, interconnected process that transcends the chronological and geographical limitations of a fixed European moment. Bringing together scholars from across disciplines, it encourages narratives that trace the movement of ideas, texts, images, everyday artefacts and peoples across regions from the Mediterranean to Asia and the Americas.

For this iteration of the conference, papers are invited on the following core themes: 'The Renaissance Beyond Europe; 'Beyond the Medieval-Renaissance Divide'; 'London as Global City (including Migration and Multilingualism)' and 'Object-Based Research'. Submissions can also be considered under the 'Open' strand, for proposals that are not connected to those aforementioned core theme(s).

Medieval Sicily, Italy, Malta, and Ifriqiya, Leeds International Medieval Congress, 5-8 July 2027

We are planning to convene sessions at the International Medieval Congress in Leeds in July 2027. We welcome proposals that offer new research relating to Sicily, Italy, Malta or Ifriqiya between the eighth and thirteenth centuries, but with a preferred focus on the Arab-Norman period. Papers will be chaired and co-ordinated by Alex Metcalfe and Hervin Fernandez-Aceves. The conference theme is "Communities", but applicants need not address this directly. Proposals for 20-minute papers to be given in-
person should be sent to Alex Metcalfe at [email protected] Please include your name, academic status, and institutional affiliation as well as a title and an abstract (c. 150 words). A selection of papers will be made on the basis of the abstracts
submitted, and grouped according to topic, methodology, and chronology.

The deadline for proposals is 4 September 2026.

The Department of History of Art, University of California, Berkeley invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Arts of the Medieval World, tenure-track, with an expected start date of July 1, 2027.

🔍️ Position details
The Department seeks candidates maintaining an active research agenda in the study of the Arts of the Medieval World, broadly defined. The position is open in terms of geographical and chronological focus, welcoming a range of local, regional, transregional, or comparative approaches to the study of art and the built environment in Africa, Asia, and/or Europe from the 7th to the 15th century. Candidates’ teaching and research might also engage historic trade routes, sites of pilgrimage, axes of scholarly exchange, or itineraries of conquest and enslavement, such as the Trans-Saharan Trade, the Indian Ocean System, or the Silk Road. The department seeks applicants whose scholarship advances new insights on circulation, transmission, translation, reuse/adaptation, and material cultures across overlapping medieval worlds. Candidates’ teaching and research should demonstrate engagement with the changing dynamics of the discipline both methodologically and topically, including, among others, studies of race, disability, empire, ecology, gender, sexuality, and the digital humanities.

📊 Qualifications
PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in a PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.
The successful candidate will demonstrate area-specialized expertise in the art history of the Medieval World and a record of innovative research, publication, and teaching. The Department welcomes research profiles that may include international collaborations, curatorial scholarship, public scholarship or outreach, archive initiatives, cultural revitalization, historical conservation, or other modes of intellectual and institutional labor. Completion of the PhD (or equivalent international degree) strongly preferred by the start date of the position.
