The prevalence of injuries amongst musicians is alarmingly high 🥹
Some studies have rated 50% or higher injury rate for orchestral musicians…

What I’ve learned from working at one of the world’s most elite music conservatories is that:

1. injuries are frequent - especially at “crunch” times before performances.
2. Musicians are often embarrassed or afraid or unsure of where or how to get help.
3. The music is always compromised when the musician is in pain.

Musicians make their best music when they move freely and are pain-free.

This next series of video tips will offer some simple, practical tips to avoid or recover from playing-related injuries from instrumentalists. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned professional, let me know what injuries are preventing you from playing your best music below 👇🏽 and check back for more tips coming soon!

The end of the academic year is always a bittersweet moment -The satisfaction of such rewarding work, the shared discoveries, the gleeful triumphs and small steps of progress - it’s always hard to say farewell to those who are graduating and moving on…

Yet I also I savor the rhythm of an academic year that gives me time to slow down, and welcome the opportunity to downshift.

Pictured are a few gifts that my students brought on their last day of lessons for the year - my heart is full

“We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious.” - Walt Disney

Curiosity is everything! It is the key to how FM made his discoveries and the “secret sauce” to learning how to make good use of Alexander’s work

If we have a strong habit of seeing doors as barriers, we lose so much potential…
What doors will you go through today?

How will you let your curiosity show up and what will it teach you?

Another shoutout to the AT Phila follower who asked me about the Hyoid bone - did you watch y reel above about the hyoid bone?

Here’s a picture of my Center City skeletal model that does have a hyoid bone…
See it hiding underneath the chin?
Take a moment to locate yours…

Gently place your thumb and forefinger on either side of your jaw bone -Then slide your thumb and forefinger diagonally down and in towards each other - Find the small, horseshoe-shaped bone that you can toggle back and forth behind your chin - Voila!

Next notice what happens when you reach your chi forward in space - kinda hard to toggle your hyoid bone back and forth, huh? Now notice what happens to your air and what happens to your tongue

Next gently slide your ead back in space until it’s comfortably over your base so that your hyoid bone can hang freely and restore freedom to your airay and tongue…

Ahhhhh - much better!

🙌🏽 A huge shoutout to the AT Phila follower who asked me about the Hyoid bone - The unsung hero of breathing and tongue articulation and a favorite of mine 😉

The hyoid bone is a small, horseshoe-shaped bone that is suspended like a hammock in our throat. It’s so small, you may be tempted to think it insignificant - Nothing could be further from the truth!

In fact, it is entirely missing 🤨 from my home studio’s skeletal model ( remember Fred from my TEDx talk?)

The hyoid bone is the landing ledge for the both the trachea to the south and the tongue to the north. When we slide our heads forward in space - aka forward head position (or FHP) we are pushing our hyoid bone forward which simultaneously interfering with both air flow and pulling our tongue back and down .😱

Singers and wind players beware! Finding the ease-ful suspension of your hyoid bone can be a game-changer 🤸🏿♀️🤸🏿♀️

“How do you KNOW what you know, if you don’t know what you don’t know?”

I caught sight of this gem 💎 on a recent visit to the newly reopened New Museum in NYC.

So much of Alexander’s discoveries have to do with just this…. We don’t recognize our habits until they are absent - it is usually in the process of returning to habit that we can recognize it.

So as Joni would say - You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.

The longer I experiment with AT principles, the more I realize I do not know - and I’m good with that 😉

Are you ready to vacate your harmaful habits?

Another year to call a wrap at The Curtis Institute of Music ❤️

I adore helping these smart, curious and incredibly talented students make their best music! 🙌🏼

A highlight from my 28th (!!) year at Curtis was continuing to work with the Conducting Fellows and also guest teaching for Curtis alum Gauthier and his Advanced Conducting class. Understanding how their whole bodies move helps conductors have SO many more choices and helps them clarify their intention.

It’s always bittersweet to wish them all adieu as some will graduate and most head off to summer festivals…

Bon Voyage to all - until we meet again 🎶

Are you a musician that would like to free yourself from unnecessary tension and make your best music?

Here’s the final video in the series: Complimentary Directions.

🔙 Be sure to scroll back to see my previous musings on Up to Go Down and Down to Go Up and Out to Go In.

- Today’s offering is a double-header: Back to Go Forward and Forward to Go Back.

Let’s face it - our daily activities are predominantly oriented to the space in front of us and the pull forward is real!

We pull ourselves forward to walk, to reach and the ever-present-pull-forward into our screens!2🥹🤨😪

My West Coast Swing teacher uses the language of Directional Intent to describe having the intention of moving one way as you move another -

So…. We think back to move forward and ⬅️ ➡️ think forward to go back ➡️ ⬅️

The ultimate in Complimentary directions 🙌🏼

Since we’ve arrived at the end of this series - What topic shall I address next in my series of helpful hints?
