GSO had a successful Leadership Dinner to wrap up the 2016-2017 school year. We had the pleasure of hosting Christopher Friese, PhD, RN who is a Penn alum and current Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow working on health policy initiatives in the office of Senator Bob Casey.

Topics ranged from the intricacies of effective nurse staffing ratios and optimizing EMR work flow to the importance of bipartisan healthcare collaboration. Looking forward to hosting more amazing Penn Nursing Alumni next year!

A MESSAGE OF SUPPORT FROM GSO:

My fellow Graduate Nursing Students,

The events of this past week have been met with a range of emotions in our community. The common theme expressed is that many people are feeling personally vulnerable because of the rhetoric voiced during the election season and the recent reprehensible events on this very campus. Some of us may also be experiencing very real fears about the impact of potential healthcare change, myself included. Those currently in this fragile state have fears and anxieties that are real and validated. To all who are feeling concerned or at risk: we are here for you and intend to fully support you.

As we fight on, we must also recognize that some of us need additional support in a time that brings uncertainty. I encourage you to reach out to me, any executive board member, and each other as well as utilize the available campus resources listed below.

In addition, the student executives of the School of Nursing and School of Medicine will be partnering this week to lead a debriefing event for the entire graduate student community. This will be a chance for students to connect and express their feelings about recent events in a safe space. As current and future healthcare providers, I believe we should lead the charge to address this from a mental health perspective. We have a unique responsibility to heal others- but we must also seek to heal ourselves. Please look out for an update on time and location of this event.

Again, please know that I will support you and do everything in my capacity to ensure every student remains in a safe environment. This has been an exhausting and stressful week but together, we will persevere.

With Love and Kindness,

Jennifer N. Kistama
President | Graduate Student Organization
