📽️ What does it take to make a moving image — and who gets erased in the process?

LABORING IMAGES: CINEMA, MEDIA, AND EXTRACTION ( FMA 4680 / 5680 ) is a fascinating new Fall '26 class for Temple Students. Wednesdays, 9.30 am to 12.30 pm.

The course explores the hidden labor, infrastructures, technologies, and extractive systems behind film, media, VFX, and AI.

From studio labor and unions to global VFX pipelines, media archaeology, environmental extraction, and automation, this seminar asks critical questions about how images are produced — and what they conceal.

Open to graduate students + advanced undergraduates across film, media, art history, anthropology, geography, political economy, and more.

Owls are everywhere- including the Cannes Film Festival! We're sending Oliver Snook ('24) and his work on (count ‘em) two films that were selected for Cannes this year: CLUB KID directed by Jordan Firstman and ATONEMENT directed by Reed Van Dyk. This is not Oliver’s first time to have a hand in a Cannes-bound film: he previously worked on Palme d'Or winner ANORA, which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

In a quick interview, Oliver explained his role as effects and Foley editor on these projects, talked about his time and Temple and his work on sound design and ambiance. "The cool thing about kind of riding between Boyer and the film school, TFMA, was that with my roots in TFMA, I understood more about, what made film specifically work, like, what are we looking for? What's the important thing? ... And I don't think that was an experience I could have gotten if I just did TFMA, or if I just did a music degree. And it's really cool that that level of flexibility was there to allow me to dip my toes into both, and become stronger for it."

You can read more about Oliver and his films at the link in our bio!

Summer break is long, and we know you've got plans! Traveling somewhere exciting? Got cast in some summer Shakespeare? Shooting a short film or launching your podcast? We want to know what our Owls are up to when they aren't in class!

Feel free to send us a DM if you've got something exciting coming up over the next few months (or, ever, really!)

Beam us UP! TFMA turned up to sign the beam for the topping off ceremony Caroline Kimmel Pavilion for Arts and Communication which included university and local leaders!

When our new home opens in Fall of '27 it will feel so good to know all the good will and energy that's right above our heads, helping students to shoot for the stars.
