Hello again, here's what our second half of the trip looked like!

Wednesday we traveled to Santa Fe, NM, one of the densest artist markets in the United States. We started the day at the New Mexico History Museum before splitting up to explore the city. Some students visited churches and admired the architecture, while others met Native artists and learned about their craft.

Santa Fe’s museums gave us plenty to see, including the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, and the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture. After lunch, we regrouped at Andrea Fisher Fine Pottery, where an expert guided us through local Pueblo craftsmanship and introduced us to emerging artists 🖌️

Thursday at Ghost Ranch was led with a Georgia O’Keeffe landscape tour, where she spent much of her life painting the dramatic red clay hills and Southwestern terrain. The afternoon was spent interviewing, documenting, and visiting the Ruth Hall Museum of Paleontology.

Friday we woke up to snow falling in the desert, and squalls throughout our horseback riding across open land. Many of us had never ridden before, and I’d absolutely recommend it. 🐎

The day ended with more hiking, journaling, photographing, and a final group reflection on what we learned together. I also made time to revisit my horse, Pancake, and search for birds. 🔎🪶
This short trip only scratches the surface of what we experienced. I’ll share more reflections in my post-departure blog, but for now I’m grateful for the friendships and memories made along the way 🏜️🌵

Hi everyone! My name is Faith Brennan and I am an ambassador for the New Mexico Study away program! I am a junior majoring in Media Studies and Production at Klein College of Media and Communication. For the first half of our trip, we accomplished the following:

For spring break, our class flew into Albuquerque and the first stop was the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. We toured the Museum and enjoyed watching 3 dances: Corn, Rainbow, and Deer!

We got a chance to interview and get to know local Pueblos for our individual photo journalism projects. Getting the opportunity to be exposed to new cultures for the first time is priceless.

From there, we visited the Albuquerque Journal news room and received a tour by professionals in the Media field. We got to interview and ask questions about how a news company functions and how we can hone our skills to get there.

We started the next day by packing up and heading to Bandelier National Monument. Here, we hiked and saw canyon and mesa country, petroglyphs, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing walls that pay tribute to the early days of a Pueblo culture that still survives in the surrounding communities.

Then, we headed South to Ghost Ranch, which is located on 21,000 acres of red and yellow cliffs of the Piedra Lumbre. As a class, we are staying at the "corral" that was once a dude ranch, and have access to 5 hiking trails on the site.

On Tuesday morning, we went on a night hike with Professor Sarah Landwehr to photograph the blood moon. Then, followed up with a portrait workshop, a ghost ranch history tour, and a private tour at Ghost Ranch's Florence Hawley Ellis Museum of Anthropology. We finished the day by accomplishing a hike up to Chimney rock. 🌄

At the end of everyday, we finish it with an open debrief to bounce off of each others insights from the day 🦌🥾🌌📰

I am excited to share the second half of our program 📸

Our Multimedia Scholar for Communication and Cultures of the American Southwest in New Mexico program, Faith Brennan, is preparing to take flight to New Mexico over Spring Break this weekend! In her pre-departure blog, Faith reflects on her experiences taking the course associated with the program and how indigenous stories connect to Philadelphia and beyond.

Here’s a snippet about what she has to say about her time in the class:
“I was shocked to learn that the towns, neighborhoods, street names, and rivers I grew up referencing were rooted in Native American history. I began to see my surroundings differently. These weren’t distant stories from a textbook; they were embedded in the ground I walk on every day and woven into the identity of my city.”
