Sign up for our Spring Term course: FRENCH 430.
As part of Drexel’s Global French initiative, this course integrates community-based learning (CBL) through partnerships with AFRICOM-Philly and the Philadelphia Film Society. Students will take part in experiential projects such as storytelling workshops and public film screenings (e.g., Movie on the Block), forging meaningful connections with Philadelphia’s Francophone communities while exploring the global dimensions of Francophone identity and expression. Designed for students with intermediate to advanced proficiency in French, the course enhances both linguistic fluency and intercultural competence. It challenges students to move beyond reductive portrayals and engage critically with contemporary issues across African and diasporic contexts. All coursework and discussions are conducted in French.

We are excited to kick off a lecture series this term titled GLOBAL CAFE. The goal of Global Cafe is to give GSML students the opportunity to get to know more about GSML Faculty's collective research initiatives and also provide smaller venues for students to get to know each other in a less formal setting. We will be providing light refreshments after each lecture in the series.

Date: February 18, 2026
Time: 12:00 to 2:00 PM
Location: Academic Building Room 302

Space is limited, so RSVP is required:

Our first lecture will be given by Professor Nada Matta. The title and description of her talk is below:

Class Forces: Youth and Labor in the Making of the Egyptian Uprising of 2011
Based on my book monograph, this lecture adopts a political economy approach to explain the dynamics behind the Egyptian uprising. I examine how shifts in capitalist production and changing class relations reshaped political opportunities, fueling social and political unrest. Moving beyond the dominant focus on rising grievances under neoliberalism, I argue that the interdependent relationship between capitalists and the regime produced an uneven neoliberal turn that created openings for labor mobilization. This dynamic also loosened constraints within the electoral system, encouraging democratic and youth movements to protest. Focusing solely on movement capacities—limited up until the uprising—misses the larger story: class linkages and dynamics were central to movement empowerment, mass mobilization, and the ability to sustain collective action in Tahrir. These same class dynamics also reveal the organizational weaknesses and limited coalition-building capacities that ultimately contributed to the uprising’s failure.

Join us for a free community screening! Tickets: https://filmadelphia.org/movies/souleymanes-story/

On February 25 the Department of Global Studies and Modern Languages will be co-presenting a screening of Souleymane’s Story (Boris Lojkine, France, 2024) in partnership with the Philadelphia Film Society and the Alliance Française de Philadelphie. The film explores immigration from Africa to Europe, focusing on identity, precarity, and the legacies of colonial power through the story of a delivery worker navigating daily life in Paris while facing immigration uncertainty.

The event connects directly to GST 241: Contemporary Issues in Francophone Africa, taught by Dr. Parfait Kouacou, and is relevant to GSML students more broadly. Dr. Kouacou will offer brief introductory remarks, and the event is open to the university community.

Location: Film Society East, 125 S. Second Street (Sansom Walk)

It's and today is our first post in German.

"Schadenfreude" - The emotional experience of pleasure in response to another’s misfortune.

"Schadenfreude ist die schönste Freude“, sagt man im Scherz." (Nothing brings more joy than Schadenfreude-with a hint of irony)

Listen to our latest episode of ON THE MAP featuring James Langel. https://drexel.edu/coas/academics/departments-centers/global-studies-modern-languages/alumni/

Even though James Langel, BA international area studies '03, MBA '07, began his freshman year at Drexel as a business major, he says making the change to global studies allowed him to ultimately meet his career goals. James' cultural immersion began with programs like study abroad in Madrid and a co-op in Paris that inspired him to learn many languages and gain cultural competency. To this day, these skills help him better understand people's behaviors and give him vital insight into the global market in his job as the Product Owner of Visual Community Generated Content at IKEA. In this role, James, who earned his MBA from Drexel's LeBow College of Business, develops digital strategies and video technology to promote IKEA's product line across more than 25 different countries.

We're back with a post from Japan! 一期一会 "ichi-go ichi-e" is a Japanese phrase. It's translated as "once in a lifetime chance," however, the meaning is deeper than that. It's the sentiment to cherish the shared moment with a stranger that you will never see again. For instance, you take a workshop, and you do an activity together with another participant. You probably won't cross paths with that person again in your life, and you both know that, and still you do your best to have a meaningful experience together.
