Last week we had the privilege of participating in volunteer work at Sanctuary Farm Phila! Sanctuary Farm is an urban farm in north Philly (Sharswood) focused on community well-being, sustainable agriculture, and social justice.

Dr. DiSantis has worked with Sanctuary Farm the past year on a produce prescription program for pre-hypertensive adolescents.

Meet Marissa Leahy, a student in our MS Population Health program.

"I work as an Infection Control Practitioner at Jefferson Health covering Jefferson Methodist Hospital and Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation. In this role, I focus on preventing healthcare-associated infections, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting patient safety. The courses in the Population Health program have deepened my understanding of healthcare systems, quality improvement, and data-driven decision-making. Topics like health policy, value-based care, and care delivery models directly relate to the challenges I see every day. The program has helped me think more strategically about how infection prevention fits into broader population health goals, especially as healthcare continues to shift toward patient-centered, high-quality care."

Low-income communities tend to be the most affected by health inequities, which can lead to lower access to nutritious foods and potentially developing chronic illnesses like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

👋 Meet Katie DiSantis, PhD, MPH, an associate professor of public health at JCPH & associate director of the Institute for Smart & Healthy Cities at Thomas Jefferson University.

Dr. DiSantis aims to create long-lasting public health interventions to help people in these communities live healthier, more sustainable lives.

This includes bringing engaging nutrition education to people of all ages (including motivating students to create a music video about nutrition) and providing free access to healthy foods to community members throughout the Philadelphia region and to patients within the Jefferson Health system and affiliates like Nemours Children's Health.
