Introducing our latest virtual lecture series: Penn Vet Working Dog Center’s "Past, Present, and Future."

This three-part series will commemorate the retirement of Cindy Otto, the center's director and founder, and a professor of Working Dog Sciences and Sports Medicine.

In the first installment of this series, Dr. Otto will share lessons drawn from canine companions, heroic working dogs, one ridiculously smart cat, a wild black vulture, and the many other creatures she has encountered in her 35 years of dedicated service to Penn Vet.

You're going to see some new, excited faces around here 👀

Yesterday, we welcomed a new group of students from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, St. George's University, and the PAVE program who will complete a full year of clinical rotations at Penn Vet’s two animal hospitals as part of their veterinary education journeys.

PAVE, or the Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence, is a pathway program for veterinarians who are graduates of international veterinary programs to further develop clinical competencies at AVMA-accredited veterinary schools, equipping them with advanced training that can be applied in their home countries.

If you see them around, be sure to say hi! We are so glad to welcome them to the Penn Vet community! 👋

Yesterday, we celebrated the opening of the DAT-AI-LAB, a first-of-its-kind laboratory dedicated to monitoring animal behavior using artificial intelligence, at Penn Vet New Bolton Center. ⚡🥂

DAT-AI-LAB, short for Data, Analytics, and Technology for AI in Livestock Animal Behavior, is a partnership between the Penn Vet Swine Teaching and Research Center and tech firm AgriGates, co-founded by Daniel Foy. The laboratory was kick-started last year thanks to a $31,000 grant from the Agricultural Innovation Grant Program through the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and a $90,000 grant from Pennsylvania’s Center for Poultry and Livestock Excellence .

“The technology in this new, state-of-the-art lab at the New Bolton Center is already serving as a powerful tool to monitor animal health and speed up intervention when speed counts most to protect livestock and a farmer’s operation, and we hope more farmers will benefit from it,” said Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding.

Our celebrations continue as we honor Penn Vet’s Alumni Achievement Award recipients. 🥂

At last weekend’s Alumni Reunion festivities, the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award was presented to Patricia A. Brown, V’78, and the family of David E. Kenny, V’84, who was given his honor posthumously. John J. McCauley, C’88, V’92, received the Alumni Award of Merit.

“Throughout their careers, Drs. Brown, Kenny, and McCauley have contributed substantially to public service, wildlife medicine, and clinical practice, highlighting the diversity of our profession,” said Penn Vet Dean Andrew Hoffman. “They represent the very best of our alumni, and they inspire future veterinarians to advance the health and well-being of animals in service to their communities. We are very grateful for their dedication to Penn Vet and to the profession.”

Dr. Brown delivered remarks at Monday’s commencement ceremony. Dr. McCauley will deliver remarks at V’28’s White Coat Ceremony in the fall.
