Celebrating Our Graduate Studies Students!

Oglala Lakota College Graduate Studies would like to extend a HUGE congratulations to Marilyn Frank (LAKM), Fallen Sorbel (LAKM), Summer Last Horse (LAKM), and Jacqui Giago (LMEA) on successfully defending their research proposals during today's Graduate Studies Colloquia!

This is an incredible milestone in their graduate journeys and represents months of hard work, dedication, critical thinking, and commitment to research that will contribute to our communities.

With their successful proposal defenses behind them, these four students will now move forward with the appropriate OLC Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Oglala Sioux Tribe Research Review Board (OST RRB) processes, seeking the necessary approvals before beginning their research, collecting data, and analyzing their findings.

Throughout the day, 52 individuals joined us in person and virtually to support our students and celebrate their academic accomplishments! We are so grateful to the students' committee members, faculty, members of the OLC community, families, and community members who took time out of their day to attend, ask thoughtful questions, offer feedback, and encourage our students. Your presence and support are an important part of their academic journeys.

Research is about more than fulfilling a degree requirement. It is about asking meaningful questions, contributing new knowledge, and finding ways to strengthen our communities. We are excited to see how each of these students continues to develop their research and the contributions their work will make.

We are SO proud of you, Marilyn, Fallen, Summer, and Jacqui! Your dedication and perseverance have brought you to this important milestone, and we cannot wait to see where your research takes you next!

Wóphila to everyone who helped make our first Graduate Studies Colloquia of the academic year such a success! ❤️

Oglala Lakota College Graduate Studies is excited to launch our Lakota Leadership & Lifeways Series this year with a special presentation by Dr. Craig Howe!

“Lakotan Societies as Models for Lakotan Governance”

Tuesday, October 13, 2026
5:30–7:00 PM (MST)
In Person: OLC LaCreek College Center and Virtually: Via Zoom

Dr. Howe, an Oglala Lakota scholar and founder of the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies (CAIRNS), will explore how Lakotan societies provide meaningful models for leadership, governance, relationships, and collective responsibility.

This session invites participants to consider how Lakotan knowledge, values, and traditional ways of organizing communities can continue to inform leadership and decision-making today.

Our new Lakota Leadership & Lifeways Series is designed to bring together students, educators, community members, and leaders to learn from Indigenous scholars and knowledge holders while strengthening connections between Lakota knowledge, leadership, and contemporary community practices.

This event is open to everyone! Whether you are a student, educator, community leader, or simply interested in learning more, we welcome you to join us in person or virtually.

Please see the flyer for additional information. We hope to see you there!
