We said farewell to our Vice President of Academic Affairs as he embarks on a new chapter. To remember us, we gifted him a portrait of LCU’s Norton Memorial Library, hand drawn by one of our talented art students, Kyle LeJeune. Dr. Robertson, we are sad to see you go, but we wish you all the happiness!

The Library of Congress was officially established on April 24, 1800, when President John Adams signed a bill providing for the transfer of the government to Washington, D.C., which included a $5,000 appropriation for books. The library was originally designed to serve the research needs of Congress.

The original collection was destroyed by British troops in 1814, leading to the purchase of Thomas Jefferson’s personal library to replace it

Facts about the 1800 establishment:
Founder/Signer: President John Adams.
Purpose: Purchase “such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress.”
Initial Funding: $5,000 to purchase books and fit up a suitable apartment.
Initial Collection: The first books were ordered from London, with the first catalog (1802) listing 964 volumes and nine maps.
Initial Location: The U.S. Capitol.
First Librarian: John James Beckley.
