Alice Lloyd College

Alice Lloyd College Founded in 1923, ALC is a private, four-year liberal arts work college in Eastern Kentucky. It also grants students the opportunity to pay for their education.

Alice Lloyd College is one of the most distinctive liberal arts institutions in the Appalachian region. Alice Lloyd awards tuition guarantees for residents of 108 Central Appalachian counties in its service area (KY, OH, TN, VA, WV), regardless of income, who are eligible for admission. The College provides high quality educational opportunities primarily for students with outstanding leadership p

otential for effective service to the surrounding mountain region regardless of the student's ability to pay. All students are required to work in the College's Student Work Program. The program requires every full-time student to work a minimum of 160 hours per semester at an on-campus or off-campus job. These jobs are varied and all students are paid at the prevailing minimum wage rate. All on-campus jobs are necessary to the normal operations of the College and the off-campus jobs help provide needed services in the surrounding communities. The program is designed to teach students the meaning of responsible leadership, self-discipline, and self-reliance. It also enhances the total educational program through the teaching of skills, responsibilities, attitudes, and habits associated with work. Many alumni have gone on to complete graduate and professional programs at little or no personal cost through the continued support from Alice Lloyd College. A large number of these graduates have returned to the mountains as teachers, physicians, attorneys, and other leaders of their communities, fulfilling founder Alice Spencer Geddes Lloyd's dictum: "The leaders are here."

Today on International Women’s Day, we honor the legacy of Alice Lloyd and June Buchanan.
Their belief in the power of education helped create opportunities for students across the Appalachian region. Because of their vision and dedication, generations of students have been able to earn a quality, character-based college education with little to no debt and return home to serve their communities.
We are grateful for the legacy these women left at Alice Lloyd College and for their impact on the mountains we call home. đź’™

When Kelli arrived at Alice Lloyd College in the fall of 1991, she never imagined she was walking toward her future husband.

After her first year, Kelli withdrew in the summer of 1992 to pursue another path. But a phone call from John Mills asking if she was sure made her rethink her decision. She returned that fall, a choice that would change her life.

Shawn had started at Alice Lloyd College in 1992, and the two officially met that winter while walking through the library parking lot on their way to class. By March 1993, they were dating. By Christmas, they were engaged. In 1994, they were married.

They returned to campus as a married couple, living in separate dorms while finishing their degrees. Kelli completed her student teaching in December 1995, and Shawn finished the following year. During his four years at ALC, Shawn was the starting point guard and led the Eagles to the national tournament in Idaho each season.

After graduation, they made their home in Inez, where they have raised three sons: Wesley, Caleb, and Landon. Wesley and his wife Kaitlyn are both proud ALC graduates.

Kelli retired from elementary education in 2025, and Shawn continues coaching while also serving in an administrative role at Prestonsburg.

Fun fact: Years before they met, Kelli saw Shawn play basketball for Belfry High School and after a game-day tussle with a player she was dating at the time, she was sure he was a jerk. They had never even spoken.

But after just a few conversations at ALC, she told her dorm friends she was going to marry him.

They thought she was crazy.

She was not. ❤️

In 2004, two college paths crossed at ALC—and neither of them knew their whole life was about to change.

Brett was a business administration major, the work-head of the grounds crew—cutting grass, shoveling snow, and driving the garbage truck. Ida was an elementary education major, a work-head in the daycare/preschool, and a cheerleader with a heart for kids.

They met at the Hunger Din. Just a simple moment… that turned into everything. Two years later, in 2006, Brett asked Ida to marry him in the very spot where they first met—proof that some places hold more than memories… they hold destiny. They graduated together from ALC in 2008, and just three weeks later were married in front of Ms. June’s Cottage, surrounded by love, hope, and the start of forever.

Brett says it best:
“I went to college for a degree… and left with the love of my life.”

Some love stories are written in textbooks.
Ours was written in hallways, hard work, and a little college cafeteria called the Hunger Din. 💍✨

Our Valentine’s Couple Series continues with Belinda and Catlin Lester.

❤ Belinda and Catlin met in August 2006 when Belinda was a freshman taking History 203 with Dr. Rhonda Smith-Daugherty (then just Dr. Smith), and Catlin was a sophomore in the same class. Dr. Smith suggested that Belinda tutor Catlin because he needed help with the course. At the same time, Belinda was struggling in Roy Reynolds’ science class, and Roy suggested that Catlin tutor her since he worked for him that term. They often joke that Dr. Smith and Roy sensed something they didn’t yet know and set them up. Twenty years later, they are still together, have been married for 14 years, and are raising their almost 8-year-old daughter.
They spent much of their time at Alice Lloyd College in the library, where Belinda held tutoring sessions as a TA, or later in the Hunger Din, where Catlin was a work head. Today, they are both teachers, with Belinda working for Floyd County Schools and Catlin for Cloverport Independent. Without ALC, they would not have met. While many people reminisce about high school, for Belinda and Catlin, it is their time at ALC they cherish most. They loved their time in Pippa, the friends they made, the relationships they forged, and the lifetime of love they built. ❤

Alice Lloyd College is where lifelong friendships begin, and sometimes, lifelong love. đź’™
All month long, we’re celebrating couples who met and graduated from ALC. Let’s kick things off with Daniel and Tiffany Combs!

Dan and Tiffany met at ALC in 2009. Dan was a Sports and Fitness Management major and a member of the Eagles basketball team, which meant he basically lived in the gym. Tiffany was in an introductory physical education class, and somehow his attendance for her PE class was better than his own. It took him a few weeks, but he finally worked up the nerve to ask for her number. They graduated from ALC in 2011, got engaged later that year, and were married in 2012, just after she started her job as Director of Marketing and Communications at ALC. Tiffany says, “sometimes you get more than you bargain for walking the Purpose Road!”
