The PSU Ornithology class recently traveled with Dr. George to the Platte River, Nebraska, to experience the Sandhill Crane migration. This year, we were joined by our friends from Fort Hays State University for a fun and memorable weekend packed with bird banding, close-up views of a prairie chicken lek, a special presentation at the Crane Trust, and a visit to Loess Bluffs.
On Saturday afternoon, faculty and students from the University of Tulsa and the University of Nebraska–Kearney joined us for a mini symposium to share our bird research projects.
The highlight of the trip was our morning at the Rowe Sanctuary. We awoke at 4:30 a.m. and made our way to the icy Platte River under starlight, where tens of thousands of cranes came into view at dawn. Their echoing bugle calls filled the air as they displayed and eventually lifted off in waves—an unforgettable experience for all who were present.
