We welcome anyone with a bachelor's degree and an interest in learning about autism. The Department of Teaching and Leadership in the College of Education at Pittsburg State University offers a graduate certificates that focus on school-aged children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and also a program for early childhood. The school-ages programs are the certificate in “Classic” Autism and “Higher F
unctioning” Autism. The programs are designed to certify that educators, service providers and family members have developed specialized knowledge and skills related to the characteristics, methods of assessment and evidence-based practices for school-aged children. Single certificates are 15 credit hour programs and a dual certificate is an 18 credit hour program. The Early Childhood Autism Certificate is an 18 credit hour program for educators, home- and community-based providers and family members. The program is designed to certify that the individual completing the certificate has developed specialized knowledge and skills regarding the characteristics, methods of assessment and evidence-based practices for teaching young children, ages 0-5, with autism spectrum disorders and developmental delays. The early childhood coursework was developed in collaboration with professionals from the TASN-Autism and Tertiary Behavior Supports, KU Med - Center for Child Health and Development, Kansas Parent Information Resource Center, Families Together, Inc., Kansas Center For Autism Research and Training, Kansas early childhood special educators, and parents. For each course students are assigned learning modules to complete online. During the fall and spring semesters, at the end of each learning module, classes meet online for a 90 minute facilitated discussion (Tuesday evenings). Students must have access to high speed Internet (preferably hard-wired), a webcam, and a head-set.
