Labor Day Weekend is here! 🌤️

We know the work doesn’t always stop just because it’s a holiday. There are patients to care for, families to look after, responsibilities to handle and, sometimes, a to-do list that doesn’t know it’s a three-day weekend.

But wherever this Labor Day finds you, KU AHEC hopes you’re able to slow down, take a breath and enjoy some well-deserved time for yourself and the people who matter most.

If you’re traveling, spending time outdoors or gathering with family and friends, keep these safety tips in mind:

☀️ Stay hydrated and cool: Take breaks from the heat and watch for signs of heat-related illness.
🧴 Protect your skin: Use sunscreen and reapply as directed, especially when spending extended time outdoors.
🚗 Travel safely: Buckle up, stay focused behind the wheel and never drive impaired.
🏊 Be safe around water: Keep a close eye on children and use appropriate safety equipment.
🦟 Protect against insects: Use insect repellent when enjoying the outdoors.
❤️ Look out for one another: Check in on family, friends and neighbors, especially those who may need a little extra support in the heat.

However you spend the weekend, take care of yourself, stay safe and enjoy the holiday!

Learning healthcare goes beyond the classroom.

Through USD #270's Healthcare Occupation Exploration program, local students have the opportunity to step inside different areas of healthcare, learn alongside professionals, and get a firsthand look at careers they may one day pursue.

This week, students spent time with the Rooks County Health Center Rehab team, getting an up-close look at the work they do with patients every day.

Experiences like these give HOSA (Future Healthcare Professionals) students a chance to ask questions, try something new, and discover where their interests might take them.

We're proud to give the next generation of healthcare professionals a place to learn right here in Rooks County, and we hope these experiences inspire students to pursue careers in healthcare and one day return to Rooks County to work and serve their community.

Join us OCTOBER 10, 2026, via webinar for SPARK 2026: Understanding Lewy Body Dementia, an educational program designed for health care providers and professionals.

Using the documentary SPARK: Robin Williams and his Battle with Lewy Body Dementia as part of the course, participants will explore:

🧠 Recognizing the signs and symptoms of Lewy body dementia (LBD)
🔎 Evidence-based approaches to diagnosis and treatment
❤️ Care management and supporting patients and caregivers
➡️ When to refer and how to help patients navigate the daily challenges of LBD
⚕️ Common pitfalls that can accelerate decline—and how to avoid them

LBD is the second most common form of degenerative dementia after Alzheimer’s disease, yet it is often missed or misdiagnosed because early symptoms can resemble Alzheimer’s disease or psychiatric conditions.
