What do sports really reveal about power, politics, and privilege?

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an eye-opening conversation on Deconstructing the Intersection of Sports, Power, Privilege, and Politics with Dave Zirin and discussant Rob Ruck.

From sportswashing to how global sporting events shape political narratives and influence power, we explored how the games we love are deeply connected to the systems that shape our world—on and off the field.

Thank you for being part of this important dialogue through the Global Studies Center’s Transformation of Place Series.

As Pittsburgh prepares for the 2026 NFL Draft, North America readies itself for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and Los Angeles looks ahead to the 2028 Summer Olympics, how do global finance, political power, and inequality shape what happens on the field and on the court?

Join us tomorrow for a timely conversation on the intersection of sports, power, privilege, and politics.
Featuring Dave Zirin, sports editor at The Nation Magazine, with discussant Rob Ruck, Professor of History.

Thank you to everyone who joined Rebuilding Roots in Wallmapu: Public Art as Decolonial Praxis last Thursday, April 2nd!

Convened by Professor Caitlin Bruce, Global Studies Center Faculty Fellow, the talk featured insights from a book-in-progress on feminist social infrastructure in the Americas, and drew inspiration from “Creative Cities, Tourism and Street Art in a Global Frame”.

The talk highlighted how Murales Tierra Humedales uses public art to connect land, water, and community in southern Wallmapu.

Reflections on the War on Iran and the Greater Middle East

On March 30, we came together for a thought-provoking conversation with Dr. Sami Hermez, Professor of Anthropology at Northwestern University in Qatar and author of My Brother My Land and War Is Coming: Between Past and Future Violence in Lebanon.

As a former UCIS Visiting Professor in Contemporary Global Issues, he provided deep insights on what is unfolding in the Middle East.

The conversation was guided through engaging moderation by Dr. Michael Goodhart, Professor of Political Science and former Director of the Global Studies Center, helping bring clarity and depth to a complex discussion.

Tomorrow marks the final session of this year’s Global Appalachia Reading Group!

In our last conversation of the semester, we’ll be discussing Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver as part of this spring’s theme, Spaces. Throughout the series, participants have explored how spaces in Appalachia connect to global conversations on climate change, environmental justice, and the movement of species across shifting landscapes.

In this final session, participants will explore the spaces that comprise and define Appalachia, reflect on the theme of dispossession within the context of Appalachia, and discuss global climate change through displaced species that find a home in Appalachia.

This reading group is part of the Global Appalachia Learning Alliance that supports research, dialogue, and learning about Appalachia in global context.

🗓 April 1
🕜 1:30–3:00 PM
📍 Posvar Hall 4217 + Teams

We’re excited to close out the year’s GALA series with this important conversation!
