Active Minds at Carnegie Mellon aims to break stigma surrounding mental illness and raise awareness on mental health through campus-wide events and meetings. We initiate open discussion on the community's mental well-being, provide students with easy access to information about mental disorders, and encourage students to seek help. We are a chapter of Active Minds, a national nonprofit organizatio
n that promotes awareness and education about mental health and mental illness on college campuses, providing a platform for discussion on subjects that have a stigma surrounding them. Our main goal is to remove stigma surrounding mental health disorders so that students will feel more comfortable openly discussing mental-health related issues and seeking help. This is achieved by:
1) promoting a general awareness of holistic health by emphasizing care of both body and mind
2) providing students with information about Eating Disorders, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, and other mental health disorders.
3) serving as a liaison between the student body and the mental health community by holding campus-wide activities such as hosting guest speakers, providing informational fact sheets, organizing fundraisers and running national Active Minds programs designed to reduce stigma and raise mental health awareness. Mental health and mental illness are extremely pertinent topics and deserve attention. Everyone has something to contribute to reducing stigma, and the first step is to get educated and be made aware. By becoming a part of Active Minds at Carnegie Mellon, you will become a part of the change that is occurring across college campuses all over the nation, one conversation at a time.
