What do you know about kuruma ningyō?
The Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania brings you a hidden gem of Japanese performance art on Sunday, Feb. 5th in collaboration with The University of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts 6–12.

Floating across the stage on wheeled carts, performers of the 160-year-old kuruma ningyō tradition bring meter-high puppets to life through delicate movements, a dynamic stage and live Japanese instrumentation.

Koryū Nishikawa, fifth generation master of the kuruma ningyō style, and Tom Lee, co-director of the Chicago Puppet Lab and Chicago Puppet Studio, tell the tale of "AKUTAGAWA." This production explores the vulnerable art and psyche of famed Japanese modern author Ryunosuke Akutagawa through a narrative amalgam of five of the artist’s famous short stories.
