Kel-Li Chen has been named the 2026 recipient of the K&L Gates Prize! This spring, Chen graduated with a double major in psychology and biological sciences, along with an additional major in human-computer interaction. Dietrich College welcomes Cassidy Sugimoto, who will join Carnegie Mellon University as Bess Family Dean, effective July 1! Sugimoto is a globally recognized scholar whose work lies at the intersection of information science and science policy.

She will succeed Richard Scheines, who has led the college since 2014.

Cassidy R. Sugimoto, a globally recognized scholar whose work lies at the intersection of information science and science policy, will join Carnegie Mellon University as the next Bess Family Dean of Dietrich College, effective July 1, 2026.

Ina Brandes, minister of culture and science, and a group of academic leaders, all from the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, completed a three-day visit to Pittsburgh last week, including two days on Carnegie Mellon University’s campus. The regions, which share industrial pasts based on coal and steel, are now recognized hubs for innovation and economic development. During the visit, Rebecca Nugent, head of the Department of Statistics & Data Science, and Manfred Bayer, chairman of the board of Digital University North Rhine-Westphalia and president of TU Dortmund, signed a memorandum of understanding to explore potential collaborative opportunities for AI innovations in research and teaching.
