The 2026 American Thoracic Society International Conference was a remarkable showcase of the impact of the DOM's Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine (PACCSM), with faculty earning national recognition and presenting research that could help reshape the future of respiratory care.

Congratulations to:
🏆 Kambez Benam, D.Phil. (Oxon), ATSF, recipient of the ATS Respiratory Health Award's Research Innovation and Translation Achievement Award for pioneering translational innovations including Lung-on-a-Chip technologies that are accelerating pulmonary research and therapeutic development.

🏆 Charles Dela Cruz, MD, PhD, recipient of the ATS Assembly on Pulmonary Infections and Tuberculosis Senior-Level Peer Recognition Award for his longstanding contributions to pulmonary infection research, mentorship, clinical care, and leadership.

🏆 Alicia Rizzo, MD, PhD, recipient of the ATS Assembly on Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology Recognition of Early Academic Achievement Award (REAAch) for her innovative work advancing precision medicine approaches for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

PACCSM faculty also presented major clinical advances with the potential to transform care for millions of patients worldwide:

🔬 Patrick Strollo, Jr., MD, and Sanjay Patel, MD, MS, presented results from the Phase 3 SynAIRgy trial demonstrating that AD109, a once-nightly oral therapy for obstructive sleep apnea, significantly reduced breathing interruptions and improved oxygen levels during sleep, offering a promising new option for patients unable to tolerate CPAP.

From groundbreaking translational science and early-career discovery to practice-changing clinical trials, PACCSM faculty continue to advance respiratory medicine and improve patient care on a global scale.

Today is National Fentanyl Awareness Day – a reminder of the ongoing impact of the overdose crisis and the need to expand access to effective care.

In Appalachia and Western Pennsylvania, overdose mortality remains high despite the availability of medications that can significantly reduce risk. Persistent barriers – including stigma, limited access, and policy challenges – continue to prevent many from receiving treatment.

Congratulations to Cynthia St. Hilaire, PhD, who has been named director of a new Center for Aortic Valve Disease Prediction and Integrated Research as part of a
American Heart Association initiative.

The center will focus on:
• Predicting disease risk using machine learning
• Understanding how genetic and biological factors drive progression
• Identifying new therapeutic targets to prevent valve calcification

By bringing together engineering, biology, and clinical insight, this work aims to shift aortic stenosis care from reactive surgery to proactive prevention.
