On Friday April 7th at 7 p.m. on Alumni Hall Rm. 323, University of Pittsburgh alumni Emmy award winning producer Jon Hill and Hollywood cinematographer Nathan Cornett are returning to Pitt for an exclusive sneak preview screening of Jon’s award-winning directorial debut film, Above the Clouds.

This screening event, which is co-sponsored by Pitt Film and Media Studies, as well as Steel City Networking Entertainment Entity (SCENE), will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers. The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited so everyone is encouraged to register at the screening’s Eventbrite.

Above the Clouds won Best Independent Feature Film at its premiere at the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival, as well as picking up a Best Actress Award for the film’s co-star Kayhun Kim, who appeared most recently in Co***ne Bear. This funny and heartfelt film was written and directed by Jon, inspired by his real life, and follows Jay who must return home to Los Angeles after the death of his father, and involves a lost dog, a cassette tape, a backyard comedy show, and an unlikely romance following two strangers on a day they will never forget.

Jon and Nathan, both Pitt 2005 graduates, have been friends and collaborators since their early days as filmmakers at Pitt, where they started as co-presidents of UPTV. Since then, Jon has gone on to become a senior producer at Fox Sports. Nate has found success working on films and TV shows including Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Saturday Night Live Digital Shorts, and HBO’s The Rehearsal.

Though shot in L.A., the film involved many Pittsburgh and Pitt connections as Jon describes below:

“'I’ve always dreamed of coming back to Pitt to play my movies one day,” Jon said. And after 13 years, it's finally happening. Pitt is where I learned how to become a filmmaker. I spent every day at UPTV (the student television station), most of them with Nate Cornett, just making videos and sharing them with the students. Without it, I would never have chased my dreams and met my goals. The Pitt community, the students, the faculty, and all the beautiful people in the neighborhood have contributed to this film and I'm so proud we'll get to share it with everyone! Myself, our cinematographer, our producer, our composer, our 2nd AC, four Executive Producers, multiple Associate Producers, and four interns all graduated or will have graduated from Pitt. Whether the school knows it or not, this is a Pitt production. Our composer, Peter Mudge, aka Nice Rec, is a Pittsburgh native and graduate of Pitt. Producing for Mac Miller, J.Cole, JID, and others, he has a platinum record and a gold record with more on the way. With additional signing by Cam Chambers, this soundtrack has that "Pittsburgh Soul" sound that can only arise from the Steel City. Hail to Pitt!”

Jon and Nate will also be holding a workshop on Saturday April 8th for interested students. To attend, students should email Max Christopher at [email protected]

The FMS is so proud of our current undergrad Aditi Sridhar who was a guest on GMA3 yesterday in advance of being a presenter at the Oscars this Sunday. She was part of the Academy's Rising Golden program last summer, is President of Pitt's (formerly Pitt and Hollywood), is running a current fundraising campaign for her capstone film (see a previous post), and is working on the August Wilson documentary with Carl Kurlander.

As Carl Kurlander noted, "a couple of years ago, Aditi was part of our PITTch program we did where she got to pitch to real folks from Hollywood. Clearly, even though she still a senior, she is ready for Prime Time."

"GMA3" meets four trophy presenters from the Academy gold talent development and inclusion initiative.SUBSCRIBE to GMA's YouTube page: https://bit.ly/2Zq0dU5...

CMU International Film Festival is kicking off next week. Full info in the post about opening night film Full Time with Q&A moderated by Dana Och.

Full Time

Directed by Éric Gravel

France | 2021 | 88 min

Thursday, March 16th | 7PM
@ CMU's McConomy Auditorium

Full Time puts the alarm clock in the spotlight. Our nonstop hero beeps, swipes, and runs to fit 36 hours into a single work day. Add motherhood into the dizziness of low-wage labor, and we meet Full Time in its entirety. At first glance the film appears to be the slice-of-life of a single mother trying her best. Yet, as we relate more and more with her struggle; the missed transport, the interview cram, the endless tardiness, we begin to see a critique of the systems we live and work in. And yet, within all of the stress, fatigue, and endless running, there is hope.

This event includes:

Opening Night Reception catered by La Gourmandine
Q&A moderated by University of Pittsburgh Professor Dana Och

Two of our outstanding undergrad majors--Aditi Sridhar and Owen Gambil--are fundraising for their capstone film, Aloo Poori.

As the webpage explains, these two students have worked on a number of professional shoots and projects already, so they have the experience to know what a reasonable budget for a professional short film is as well as notable experience already.

Mission Statement:
Rooting itself in South Asian American culture unapologetically, this film supports unheard voices with cultural vibrancy & specificity. It allows Indian culture to intersect with both mental health stigmas across generations and conflicts over culinary traditions while speaking to universal truths.

Synopsis:
Aloo Poori follows the story of a mother and daughter during their last day of living together in a small town in Western Pennsylvania. 27-year-old Sejal is on the cusp of leaving her home and mother behind, unsure if she’s scared to go, or scared to stay. Her mother Madhuri is avoiding a recent mental health diagnosis and her daughter's departure by throwing her heart into her cooking.

The two have never had to function without each other, and on the eve of Sejal’s departure, they realize they might not know how to. A comfort food dinner shared by the family, and an argument over the making of 'aloo poori' test what forgiveness and farewell mean to this household.

Aloo Poori is a nostalgic love letter to family traditions and the comfort of home. It confronts the anxieties of missed forgiveness and leaving the ones we depend on most amidst the start of new beginnings. Inspired by many motherly events, witness a mother and daughter's journey in saying goodbye.
