leaders. Duquesne University's School of Education is a leader in urban education and social justice. We are a member university of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA). Further more, UCEA appointed the Duquesne University School of Education as one of its 8 national program centers. These centers facilitate research and collaboration for a targeted interest area aimed at serving the needs of school children through the development of effective leaders. Duquesne University is the UCEA program Center for Educational Leadership and Social Justice. (CELSJ)

Anna Lahoda (Ed.D. Educational Leadership), Sara Shaw (M.S. Higher Education), Tiana Brophy (Ed.D. Educational Leadership), and Brandy Gershon (Ed.D. Educational Leadership), visited the youth mentoring program at South Hills Interfaith Mission. Visiting juniors and seniors at Baldwin Whitehall School District, the alumni wanted to share with the students how there are adults on college campuses who are there to support them.

Patrice Bryan, a PhD Counselor Education and Supervision student, recently got elected to the position of Graduate Student Representative for the North Atlantic Region Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (NARACES). She will be serving a two-year term to support and advocate for graduate students, promote graduate student membership, and enrich their graduate experience.

She would like to thank Duquesne University’s Counselor Education program for being a great model of what it looks like to be successful in the field, along with her professors who have helped build her confidence and support her dreams.

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Richard Joseph Behun '13!

Dr. Richard Joseph Behun, graduate of our Ph.D in Counselor Education and faculty member at Millersville University, was nominated by Governor Josh Shapiro and unanimously confirmed by the Pennsylvania State Senate to serve on the Pennsylvania State Licensure Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors in June 2023. In January 2026, he was elected by current members of the licensure board to serve as board chairman.

In this role, Dr. Behun represents licensed professional counselors, bringing extensive leadership and expertise to the board. He previously served as the 50th President of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association and as president of the Pennsylvania Association for Counselor Education and Supervision.

Dr. Behun holds a Ph.D. and is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), National Certified Counselor (NCC), and Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS).

We congratulate Dr. Behun on this well-deserved appointment and his continued leadership in the counseling profession.

Emily Lee-Chong, a doctoral Counselor Education student, recently received a Graduate Student Meritorious Service Award from the American College Counseling Association. Emily’s experience and involvement in Duquesne University’s professional organizations have helped her to demonstrate exemplary service to the field by supporting holistic student well-being. She credits Duquesne University for providing strong mentorship, opportunities for leadership, and a learning environment that emphasizes service to the counseling profession.

Some of our Ph.D. and Psy.D. school psychology students had the opportunity to present research at the National Association of School Psychologists conference in Chicago, IL! Their research focused on classroom-wide behavior interventions, social media and bullying policies in public schools, concussion case law and management procedures, social-emotional learning curriculum for black boys, and autistic youth in the juvenile justice system.
