Last month in South Africa, the Denis Hurley Centre (DHC) hosted SSW visitors from overseas including faculty members Drs. Yodit Betru, Kyaien Conner, and Toya Jones, and students Abigail Over, Manu Ayyalasomayajula and Zoe Wamsher.

The three of the Pittsburgh students spent an extra day shadowing their senior social worker, Nonhlanhla Nhlangulela (pictured at the top with, left to right, Abigail Over, Manu Ayyalasomayajula and Zoe Wamsher).

They shared their thoughts about the visit with the DHC newsletter (heading "Inspiring Students From Around the World.") Read here: https://ow.ly/xfq650Z6jqy

The National IV-E Roundtable for Child Welfare Training and Education is a yearly gathering of representatives from public and tribal child welfare agencies and their university partners. Their goal is to share resources to build a strong child welfare workforce through training and education. This year’s theme—GROWING HOPE ROOTED IN COMMUNITY—emphasizes the power of deep roots, lasting connections, longevity, and future investment.
The Pitt Social Work Child Welfare program sponsored a table and three University of Pittsburgh CWEB graduates presented a poster: Chloe Wellons, Xavier Littlejohn, and Xander Brown.

On April 28, 2026, the Community and Racial Equity Leadership (CREL) Fellowship, led by faculty member Dr. Aliya Durham, hosted its second End-of-Program Wrap-Up at the University of Pittsburgh Community Engagement Center in Homewood Fellows and community partners gathered to reflect on their experiences, share a meal, and look ahead at the possibilities the fellowship continues to inspire. Using a Human-Centered Design activity, participants shared what they liked about the fellowship, what they hoped to see strengthened, and what they imagined for the future. Feedback highlighted deep relationships built between fellows and community partner organizations, the power of immersive learning about race in Homewood, and a shared vision for even more collective, community-centered work in the years ahead. Congratulations to our CREL Fellows and a heartfelt thank you to our community partner organizations for another impactful year!
