Serving Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado and Tuolumne counties.

Stretching from the foothills above the Sacramento Valley through rugged mountains to Lake Tahoe, south through the wine country of the foothills of Amador and Calaveras Counties to the edges of Tuolumne County, the "Golden Counties" of California have a terrain as diverse as their population. The pioneering spirit that drew the gold seekers of yesterday still thrives among our residents. Our counties remain lands that are rich in opportunity and continue to prosper through their people.

Building farm resilience is more important than ever, yet there is limited practical guidance out there on how one might make a resilient farm. The old adage of “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” is great in theory but what other “baskets” are out there for farmers?

We call this subject agricultural diversification, which in general falls into three categories, and each approach can help manage risk and build long-term resilience.

One category, agritourism, contains many possibilities. We'd love to hear from successfully diversified ag businesses out there!

Have you shored up your farm business by offering education, direct sales, entertainment, outdoor recreation or lodging options? What's working for you? Let us know below!

Susie Kocher, a Registered Professional Forester and forest advisor for UC Cooperative Extension joined a federally funded collaborative in 2022 that encourages community college students to enter the forestry field and equips them with the skills necessary to find a career after graduation. As a part of the Resilient Careers in Forestry (RCF) collaborative, Kocher works closely with educational institutions to train students in tree measurement, forest navigation, mapping and other skills that students will need for entry-level forestry positions. Forestry “Mini Camp” is offered in partnership with UC Berkeley’s Berkeley Forests team.

With a looming shortage of forestry workers in California, UC Cooperative Extension forester Susie Kocher is encouraging community college students to pursue a career in forestry.
