On Juneteenth, we recognize and reflect on an important moment in American history and celebrate the ongoing pursuit of freedom, opportunity and equality. Lakeland University honors the significance of this day and the contributions, achievements and resilience of Black Americans throughout our nation's history.

After an amazing trip, our group bid a fond “sayonara” to our LUJ friends and our neighborhood in Ryogoku. We just touched down safely in Chicago and are headed to customs and then our respective homes. Thanks to everyone who helped make this an incredible experience!

The adventure continues! This week our group had the chance to see and try out traditional Japanese instruments with the faculty of the Seiha Academy of Music. We visited the Edo-Tokyo Museum and took a road trip to see the Daibutsu and the beach in Kamakura.

Dan Ognavic has been a central part of the music department and Lakeland Music Camp for many years. We celebrate his work that touched so many lives through music. Dan’s family help to continue that legacy through the scholarship in his name.

The late Dan Ognavic, a beloved member of the Sheboygan County music community and longtime Lakeland University music faculty member, dedicated his life to educating young musicians.

Friday we made the trek to see the incredible, scenic views from Mt. Takao. At 599 meters (1,966 ft), Mt Takao boasts panoramic views of the surrounding area including Tokyo and sometimes Mt Fuji. It is also home to cultural sites like the Yakuo-in temple.

This evening we got to see amazing panoramic views of Tokyo from the Sky Tree (634 meters/ 2,08p feet). Wonderful karate demonstration by Assoc VP Charlie Stockman.

Wednesday we had the chance to learn from LUJ faculty about Japanese language, environmental and production history during the Meiji period, and to participate in the calligraphy art form.

First Japanese language classes this morning followed by an afternoon trip to Akihabara, the center for manga, anime and video game memorabilia. Tonight we head to the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony.

First day!! Getting oriented and meeting new friends at the Lakeland Japan campus. LUJ is located in the beautiful and culturally rich area of Sumida/Ryogoku.
