The Nicaragua Club is a small group of Plymouth State University students who make an annual service-trip to Nicaragua, Central America, through the non-profit organization Compas de Nicaragua (friends of Nicaragua). Group members travel to Nicaragua in May for ten days to live with host families. Students spend time living in the capital city of Managua, as well as with families in the more rural
area of La Paz. Connections to Nicaragua are through Compas de Nicaragua (Friends of Nicaragua) which coordinates multiple service trips throughout the year. Students work directly with a group called Mujeres en Accion (Women in Action), a group of thirty to forty women living in Managua. These women work and fundraise day-to-day to raise money for materials that will provide for opportunities and education to benefit their children, themselves, and the community. While in La Paz the club works on sustainable living projects such as the bio-gas pit which is a system that utilizes methane gas to power kitchen stoves. This trip allows students to not only to see what life is like in Nicaragua, but opens a door to create relationships, make friends, learn about ourselves, and share our experiences and what we have learned with others when we return to the U.S. For more information on Compas and current projects in Nicaragua visit:
