How did you spend your weekend?

For OMSIV (and Student DO of the Month), Hanien Samara it was presenting a poster at the California Thoracic Society (CTS) conference in Monterey, CA.

Student Doctor Samara said, "It was a fantastic conference focused on pulmonary critical care medicine. I am so honored to have presented on behalf of WesternU COMP and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (pulmonary critical care fellow Dr. Henrik Ghantarchyan, MD). I have also been selected to present 2 posters (on behalf of both Loma Linda and ARMC) on the national level at the American Thoracic Society (ATS) conference in May."

Please join us in celebrating Student Doctor Samara and her work!

Please join us in celebrating our new Student DO of the Month, OMSIV, Hanien Samara!

Read what her peers had to say:

"Hanien is a truly special and dedicated student, leader, and future physician. I am incredibly grateful for her and the impact she has had on my learning through LEAD. She is the kind of tutor who consistently goes above and beyond, taking the time to ensure every student feels supported, seen, and capable. What sets her apart is not only how clearly she teaches, but how deeply she cares—she meets students with patience, warmth, and genuine encouragement, making even challenging material feel approachable. Hanien already embodies the empathy, leadership, and commitment to service that patients and teams need, and I have no doubt she will become an exceptional physician."

"She is literally the most hard working person I have met, she goes above and beyond for students and creates the most beautiful board style questions for us to practice with, and will explain things in a cohesive way to make sure students understand from the bottom up. She will make a phenomenal physician and I’m so grateful to have to experience of meeting her."

"I would like to nominate Hanien for Student Doctor of the Month in recognition of her outstanding dedication to supporting and uplifting the student community. Hanien consistently demonstrates an exceptional level of passion for creating meaningful learning experiences, not only for her own classmates but for students across cohorts. Through her work with LEAD, she invests significant time and energy into designing sessions that are thoughtful, engaging, and accessible, ensuring that learners at all levels can benefit from high-quality educational resources. Her commitment extends beyond required responsibilities, reflecting a genuine desire to improve the academic experience for others regardless of whether they are in her class.

Hanien’s creativity and initiative were especially evident in her organization of the Alice in Wonderland–themed POCUS event, which combined innovation with strong educational value and showcased her ability to transform learning into an interactive and memorable experience. More broadly, she consistently anticipates student needs, develops helpful materials, and creates welcoming spaces for skill-building and collaboration. Her reliability, enthusiasm, and selfless investment in peer education embody the spirit of service, leadership, and professionalism that define our student doctor community. For her sustained efforts to enhance the learning environment and provide resources that benefit students well beyond her immediate circle, Hanien is highly deserving of Student Doctor of the Month recognition."

"She provides fantastic LEAD pre-test review sessions that include super helpful tips as well as kind and supportive feedback. She also leads by example in the SIM Lab during her rotations on campus. She’s a great leader!"

"Since I met Hanien, she has been helpful and willing to share her knowledge in a way that promotes learning. I've interacted with her as an AMR student, LEAD tutor, and now as a SIM organizer. In all three capacities, she has stood out among the rest of her peers. As an AMR student, she shared her experience on rotations and tips for success in the second year and beyond. When she gave advice it was always constructive and purposeful. As a LEAD tutor, she goes out of her way in her busy fourth year with applications and interviews to help us understand tough high yield concepts. I attribute a lot of my success this year to her reviews. As a SIM organizer, she helped plan the Alice in Wonderland ultrasound event which was a lot of fun and motivating to learn and understand ultrasound. She generally goes above and beyond for the students at this school, which goes to show how she must treat her patients. She has inspired me to be a better student doctor and reminds me of why I have a passion for medicine. She truly deserves Student DO of the month!"

"Hanien has been amazing. I cannot fathom how much dedication she has for teaching. I remember not being too interested in the LEAD sessions until she started leading them and her ability to simplify content and deliver it in a palatable manner is unmatched. She was also heavily involved in the highly entertaining themed SIM lab that was brilliant in helping us learn ultrasound. I believe her level of dedication especially with the schedule she must have should be more than enough to qualify her for SDOM"

"I would like to nominate Hanien Samara for Student of the Month in recognition of her exceptional dedication, leadership, and positivity. Her LEAD review sessions for exams are the best. They have consistently been the most organized and effective and it is clear that she invests a lot of time and effort in preparing them. She is able to break down complex material into digestible, high yield concepts making our material more manageable and engaging. Despite having a sub-I the following month, she still took time out to hold our review sessions earlier than planned and as always went above and beyond to ensure we felt prepared and supported. She is always patient and generous with her time, and excited to answer our questions. Beyond her LEAD review sessions, she organized our POCUS workshop, and incorporated an Alice and Wonderland theme that made the experience fun. She always brings enthusiasm and a constant smile to everything she does whether as a LEAD tutor or AMR student uplifting those around her. Her commitment to her peers and passion for teaching reflect the kind of physician she will become. She deserves to be recognized for her outstanding contributions."

"Hanien is an amazing tutor and TA. I have had the opportunity to attend multiple sessions for Lead tutoring and have encountered her as a grader for my competency. She is consistent and positive with her approach. She is knowledgeable and provides constructive feedback. I appreciate her taking time out of her schedule to prepare material so that students can be successful in FOMs."
