Cal Poly Pomona Geological Sciences Department

Cal Poly Pomona Geological Sciences Department We aspire to provide the highest quality education in Earth Science and its applications.

Through hands-on learning methods, faculty-mentored research, and exposure to current technology, students acquire skills applicable to careers in the Geosciences and related disciplines. The Department’s programs provide students with a global perspective for problem solving, decision making, and leadership roles in a changing world confronted by environmental challenges. Our Geology BSc program

has three different tracks: Geology, Geophysics/Earth Exploration, and Environmental Resources. Our Geology MSc program was initiated Fall 2012 with our first class of nine Master's candidates.

The SAGE Facility operated by EarthScope, will offer a FREE online workshop for undergraduate students (e.g.... computer science, geophysics, geology, earth science, math, physics, engineering, etc.) that want to develop scientific computing skills while exploring the field of seismology (plus a bonus geodesy module!). The workshop is also open to graduate students and anyone else who wants to develop scientific computing skills within a seismological context (while graduate students are admitted, they should recognize that this is an introductory workshop).

The goals for the workshop are to increase participants'...
• Knowledge, skills, and interest in seismology and scientific computing (e.g. Linux, GMT, SAC, Python/Obspy, Jupyter Notebooks),
• Self-efficacy in using seismic data, and
• Competitiveness in the application process for graduate school, summer internships, or professional jobs.

Based on previous workshops, participants should expect to invest approximately 5-6 hours per week including participating in the weekly webinar (or watching the recording). At the end of the workshop participants will receive a performance report/certificate to include in their professional portfolio.

Registration Closes on May 15, 2023
