UT Summer Science The UT Summer Science program is an exciting inquiry-based learning experience for students entering 3rd through 8th grade.

Participants l
learn alongside marine scientists and will experience science outside the classroom!

That's a wrap for UT Summer Science 2023! Here are some highlights of this year's program.
Students at our UT Summer Science program this year learned about a wide variety of marine science topics directly from graduate students, scientists, and environmental professionals. This program occurs every summer during the month of June and is a great opportunity for elementary and middle-school-aged kiddos to learn more about our marine ecosystems through hands-on activities and outdoor exploration. We had a lot of fun this summer taking the students outside to collect data of their own and learn about the many plants and animals that call South Texas home. Participants also received classroom instruction and used our labs to take a closer look at plankton and juvenile fish. At the end of each week, students created posters showcasing their newly acquired knowledge and presented their posters to their parents and families.
During the UT Summer Science program students are given the opportunity to interact directly with fish and other marine organisms. Each week during the month of June we travelled out into our bay system aboard the R/V Katy, our beloved educational research vessel. Onboard we deployed both a plankton net and a trawl net to catch organisms for closer observation. Summer Science students also got to try their hand at fishing each week and caught a lot of interesting fish in our marina.

Last day of UT Summer Science 2022. We started the day playing human scrabble and made some interesting words! Students wrapped up the week with ARK tours, beach surveys and estuarine acoustics. We ended the day with our poster presentations to both friends and family. Thank you to all the students and families for joining us!

What rain?! We had clear blue skies today for our Katy trips. Students had a blast onboard the Katy observing all the interesting organisms pulled up. 3rd/4th graders had fun fishing. There wasn't a lot of bites, but they still had fun. Then, and oldie but a goodie with fish printing! Always a favorite activity to do during camp.

UT Summer Science students had more fun today. 5th/6th graders learned about marine plastic pollution and how it effects the environment. They walked the jetties and collected all the trash we found. 3rd/4th graders enjoyed creating their own plankton and the challenge was to see who's would stay in the water column the longest. Challenge accepted!

Today was a busy day for the 5th/6th graders. Students learned about microbes and made hypotheses on which medium would was most suited for microbe growth. Then, students went out to the Wetlands Education Center and learned how to identify plants and animals using the iNaturalist app. The focus was invasive species, but we also looked at native species of plants.
