Leather Jack’s are an uncommon catch on the RV Katy! These fish are aggressive feeders with two rows of sharp teeth and will eat anything small enough to fit in their mouth. Like many marine species, they need to be handled with caution because their dorsal and a**l spines contain a potent venom.

Molgula manhattenis, a type of tunicate also known as the common sea grape, have been showing up more frequently in our benthic samples. These creatures are relatively simple, comprised mainly of two siphons that intake and expel water, an atrial chamber, and digestive system. Molgula survive well on the soft sandy bottoms of the ICW and are native to the western Gulf of Mexico.

We saw lots of “cool” fish during the last cold snap! This Scrawled Cowfish was found cold-stunned in our marina. These fish are covered in tough hexagonal plates that form a carapace and protect it from predators. Boxfish also excrete a toxin through their skin when they experience stress that can affect nearby fish and is harmful to humans when ingested. We safely brought this fish inside to warm up and released it after the front passed.
