Today we got to celebrate the official kick-off of our Reforestation project by unveiling this beautiful banner with design and art all by Purchase student Ailani Perez. Ailani is a major and minor who interned on the project this spring. We love to see these cross discipline connections on such beautiful display.

Huge thank you to Ailani and all the spring interns who helped workshop this banner.

Tree tube success against hungry deer in a cold winter! Excited to have the summer technicians do a full inventory of how the seedlings are looking out at the Blind Brook site... But we just need to get through finals and commencement first!

Solo field trip for me up to Saratoga to pick up tree seedlings today! I haven't bought from them before and got nervous about shipping them and having them get stressed. Looking forward to getting these potted this weekend and then we will have so many happy little trees for the fall

Had a great time rolling out our forest biodiversity jenga game at the meeting for the first time! Build a "forest" tower and then spin the wheel to find out what disturbance happens in your forest. The goal is to have your tower survive the most number of disturbances.

You will quickly learn that biodiverse forests made up of young and old trees is pivotal for survival!

Taking baby steps toward being a plant person every day... My new wonderful interns have set up our new cold frame. We can use this to extend our outdoor growing a little earlier in the spring, as it helps regulate temps.

I think my first serious field season was in 2008... so basically every year since then it's been the same each spring... I feel a sense of excitement for field work and a fear that there isn't enough time to get it all done. Anyone else feeling those field biologist feels right now?

Happy to welcome new Community Reforestation interns Ailani, Amelia, and Parker who have started their internships this week with the guiding help of continuing invasive species intern Ashlee. Today we toured the future home of the Commons Experimental Forest and brainstormed ways to best communicate this work to campus.

Since I've already inspired a few friends to see dermatologists, I figured I might as well share to all my friends and collaborators here. I'm really glad I went for a routine dermatologist check that discovered melanoma on my hand before it had a chance to spread. It's been two outpatient surgeries and now I think I'm on the recovery end.

I'm a strict cover-up and sunscreen girly doing field work, but I realized that doesn't really protect your hands. I'm not someone who ever tried to tan but do realize between my work and my hobbies, I sure spend a lot of time outside. If that's also you, just let me be a reminder to get your skin checked!
