Try these tips for frozen pipes!!!

Water pipes on exterior walls and in places that are subject to cold, like in the basement, attic, and under kitchen cabinets, freeze most often. (Water expands as it freezes, causing pipes to burst.)

Tips for thawing frozen water pipes:

1. Locate frozen pipe.
2. Open the faucet.
3. Begin thawing pipe near faucet and work your way down.
4. Use hair dryer, space heater, hot towels or heat lamp. DO NOT use an open flame.

Stay safe while using a space heater or fireplace to keep warm!

Heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Some tips:
Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment. Flammable items include upholstered furniture, bedding, clothing, curtains, insulation, cardboard, and papers.

Turn heaters off and unplug them when no one is in the room.

Ensure children and pets stay 3 feet away from heating equipment.

NEVER use your oven to heat your home.

Have chimneys and heating equipment cleaned and inspected by a professional once a year.

Have stationary heaters, water heaters, and central heating equipment installed by qualified professionals.

Always use the fuel specified by the manufacturer for fuel-fired heaters.

Use a sturdy fireplace screen to keep sparks from flying into the room. Allow ashes to cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance from the house.

Test smoke alarms at least once a month.

A huge and well-deserved congratulations to our 2025 4-H Volunteers of the Year, Lloyd and Christine Simmons! 🎉🌟

Lloyd and Christine go above and beyond in service, leadership, and heart, pouring countless hours into uplifting our youth and strengthening our 4-H community. Their dedication does not go unnoticed, and this honor is a true reflection of the difference they make every single day.

Please join us in celebrating these outstanding volunteers! We are so grateful for all that you do! 💚🍀

The Master Gardeners and Interns Meet and Greet was a beautiful Evening in Italy filled with learning and connection. 4-H Ambassador Makayla Davis opened with warm words of welcome. Ms. Trereikah Cruel, Agricultural Educator at Alcorn State University, shared the importance of food safety and how it begins in the soil. Master Gardener Nadine Ward demonstrated how to properly collect a soil sample, and Nichols Runnels, Environmental Science student, highlighted his research on vermicomposting. Dr. Cassie Gray concluded the evening with words of gratitude and encouragement, inspiring Master Gardeners to continue projects that beautify communities, educate others, and promote environmental stewardship. Special thanks to Pastor Lloyd Simmons and Christine Simmons for always going above and beyond and for graciously hosting our annual Master Gardeners banquet.

Last night during our Eat with Extension session, our Diabetes Support Group explored the powerful benefits of incorporating more fruits and vegetables into everyday meals. Participants learned how intentional food choices can serve as medicine by supporting blood sugar control, improving heart health, and reducing inflammation. Did you know that naturally colorful fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants that help the body function at its best?

We topped off the lesson with a refreshing fruit smoothie that showed just how simple and delicious healthy eating can be. The tasting reinforced the message that nutritious foods are not only good for you, they can be enjoyable, satisfying, and an easy part of a diabetes friendly lifestyle. Special thanks to Ms. Lisa McGowan for partnering with us!
