SC4’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is hosting an event to explore Toni Morrison’s short story ‘Recitatif’ at 6 p.m. Friday, March 17, in SC4’s Fine Arts Theatre. The discussion will be facilitated by Dr. Leah Howell and Dr. Portia Watkins.

“Recitatif” is the powerful story of two young girls, Twyla and Roberta, who are roommates at St. Bonny’s Orphanage. Morrison keeps Twyla’s and Roberta’s races ambiguous throughout the story and weaves themes of friendship, race, childhood, memory and trauma throughout the story.

Jazz clarinet player Dave Bennett is back on the SC4 stage February 9.

You don’t find many jazz clarinet players who name Alice Cooper, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Chris Isaak among their influences. You won’t find many musicians who are equally conversant with the music of Benny Goodman and Roy Orbison. In fact, you may not find even one other clarinet virtuoso who breaks from his Swing Era repertoire to sing rockabilly hits while accompanying himself at the piano or electric guitar.

Concerts are free but you’ll want to reserve a seat now for the noon or 7 p.m. concert at https://sc4.edu/campus-life/arts/arts-events/

About the play: Over 15,000 children passed through the gates of Terezin, a concentration camp 30 miles north of Prague. Fewer than 100 survived. "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" tells the story of the children of Terezin through the eyes of Raja Englandrova. Raja narrates and tells their story in flashbacks as she learns from Irena Synkova, a teacher who gives the children hope when there is no hope left and gives them the courage to write and draw about their experiences. We see the world of Terezin through their eyes, a world of laughter, of flowers, and of butterflies. From behind the barbed wire fences, teachers and students were able to show defiance; by learning even when it was forbidden, by drawing pictures of life as well as of death, and by writing poems about something bright and colorful they may have caught a glimpse of. The most famous symbol of hope was a yellow butterfly from a poem written by Pavel Friedman.
