The School of Gender, Race, and Nations creates new intellectual and community connections among its founding partners—Black Studies; Indigenous Nations Studies; Chicano/Latino Studies; and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies—to better understand and advocate for historically under-served populations crucial to Oregon’s success. The overarching areas evident in the school's name feature the rich

constellation of interlocking and challenging factors key to understanding our society and making changes for a more socially just future. Our goal is to create a space for excellence in studies and research of culture, race, ethnicity, sovereignty, nation, migration, class, gender and sexuality. In her work at Indigenous Nations Studies at Portland State University, Prof. Kali Simmons negotiates informing her students about the painful history of colonization in addition to Indigenous resilience and joy amid struggle.

“Those are the things I try to balance, right, is unpacking the reality of what colonialism has done, but to also say that as much as it tried to destroy all these great things that Indigenous people know and do — we still know those things, we're still doing those things, and we find joy, even in horrific situations,” Simmons says.

Thanks for considering a donation on for the School of Gender, Race & Nations! http://psudayofgiving.org/sgrn

As our students continue their return to campus and grapple with the “new normal” of our world in 2022 – the faculty and staff of the School of Gender, Race & Nations have focused our collective efforts on community building and improving the foundational elements of the student experience at Portland State.

From our student coffee and snack station, to the newly dedicated Roslyn Farrington Community Classroom, SGRN is committed to rebuilding the connections that faded as a result of the pandemic and emerging stronger and better connected to our communities than ever before.

A gift of any size can make a meaningful impact to our students and allows us the flexibility and imagination to continue expanding our efforts to support our campus community.
