While many think of the Emancipation Proclamation as the end of slavery in the United States in 1863, Juneteenth celebrates June 19th, 1865 when 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were declared free from Confederate control. Richard Loving, a white man, and Mildred Jeter, a black woman, had been arrested for their marriage in 1958, which they brought to the attention of then Attorney General Robert F. The Indian Citizenship Act granted Native Americans US citizenship in 1924, though it was still illegal for them to vote depending on which state they lived in until 1957. After the Citizenship act was passed, the 1934 Indian Reorganization Act also passed which gave individual tribes more autonomy from the US government.
