🗳️ Student Leadership in Action! 🗳️

Huge congratulations to .morello and for sharing their vision at last night’s Student Body President Debate! The duo of Promise Scholars are running for Student Body President and Vice-President.

Makayla, ‘28, is majoring in Elementary Education while Alexa, ’29, is studying English with a Teacher Education Pathway. They shared their vision for the future of USM is built on three core pillars: (1) advocating for every single student voice, (2) creating more daytime programming tailored for our commuter community, and (3) ensuring every student feels a true sense of representation at USM.
morello credits her community experience as a staff reporter for 📰 The Free Press 📰 to her time as a TRIO Upward Bound summer guide, and volunteering at Maine Needs as evidence of her dedication to advocacy and heart for service.

We are so proud to see these leaders stepping up to shape our campus culture! 🐾💙 All USM students will be able to cast their ballots for Student Body President & Student Senate positions via email March 30-April 3.

The Future of Law! We are incredibly proud to celebrate , Promise alum ‘25, who presented oral arguments before the Maine Supreme Court in a mock trial today.

Joseph was selected by the Maine Law faculty as one of the most articulate legal orators in his class - a testament to his dedication, sharp intellect, and hard work.

Some of current USM Promise Scholars on the pre-law track were right there in the gallery! They attended the mock proceedings to cheer on Joseph and get a firsthand look at where their own journeys can lead.

We love seeing our lead the way!

More Than a Game: Soccer is Family, Community, & Growth

Meet Kia, ‘26, Paul, ‘26 and Martin, ‘28—three dedicated Promise Scholars and teammates who truly embody the spirit of USM Men’s Soccer.

Senior Kia Dilamini, who is studying Cybersecurity, has dedicated his life to soccer, driven by the belief that the sport is about so much more than just goals—it’s about connection. Kia is the kind of leader who steps up wherever he’s needed, always ready to lift others.

His motto? “Be the best person you can be.”

He reflected that what you experience in soccer can have real-world implications. “You have to work hard and push yourself for yourself - you have to have confidence in yourself.” Following a tough loss, his teammates were devastated, Kia encouraged them and said despite not getting the results they hoped for, he reminded them that they played hard and should be proud of their effort and to use the loss as a learning moment for next year.

Kia’s advice to aspiring athletes: “It’s your attitude that shapes your life.”

We celebrate Kia, Paul, and Martin for their remarkable season and for their lasting legacy of teamwork, friendship, and heart on the field!

🎉✨ Congratulations to our incredible Promise Scholar alumni, Hussein Maow, ‘23, and Elizabeth Muana, ‘24, on earning their master’s degrees from the Muskie School of Public Service 🎓🙌

Hussein has achieved his masters in Policy, Planning & Management, while Elizabeth has earned her masters degree in Public Health. Their hard work and dedication are truly inspiring, and they are among the first Promise alumni to reach this amazing milestone!

We are so proud of you both and can’t wait to see the positive impact you will make in your communities.

🌟🎓 Congratulations to the Class of 2025 Promise Scholars! 🎓🌟

We recently had the incredible opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our graduating class of scholars at the 2025 Promise Grad & Gratitude Gala! The evening was a beautiful blend of festive music, delicious food, inspiring awards, and meaningful connections.

The celebration was particularly meaningful as this is the largest Promise cohort to graduate, and represents the highest four-year graduation rate of any Promise cohort thus far - 72%! This class is evidence that equitable investment in Maine talent is valuable and a worthwhile endeavor.

A huge thank you to our amazing Peer Leaders and all the volunteers across campus who contributed to making this event a resounding success! 🙌

⭐️ Today we celebrate student success!

Let’s hear it for Juliana Levesque, a scholar who embodies what it means to be a passionate, creative student who works toward change. She was recently awarded the honor of Editor-in-Chief for our very own Free-press!

Some words from Julz about her new role:
“The Editor-in-Chief position was split between two people for this year, and we’re keeping that dynamic for this upcoming year. I will step up from Arts & Culture Editor to work alongside Caraline Squires to manage the editorial team and our writers at The Free Press. Besides leading the team, organizing meetings, managing budgets, overseeing layouts and publications, fact-checking, reviewing content, and facilitating a streamlined workflow, I hope to create a welcoming and collaborative environment where staff and editors feel like their voices are valued and heard. I want to encourage our writers and readers to practice their right to free speech and to be more involved in their communities. I have a strong vision for building upon what our current Editor-in-Chiefs, Chris Tiner and Cayley Bowman, have established. I hope to progress The Free Press towards an organization with a stronger team and a more structured system. COVID took a toll on The Free Press, so these past few years have been focused on keeping the paper afloat and continuing to create with what we have. My biggest goals for the upcoming year are to work towards getting an advisory board back as well as a faculty advisor. That way, future editorial boards will have the support they need for using their voices and producing important content. I believe that journalism, especially print journalism, is so important and integral to fostering community as well as staying updated on current events. Without a free press, we are without agency and our civil rights, which is why we need to support and protect newspapers. I hope to accomplish this through the work I do in my new position, and I’d like to spread this message to our readers and ignite this same passion in others.”

Congratulations again, and good luck next year!

On-campus positions are an incredible way for students to gain hands-on experience, develop critical skills, and build valuable relationships.

Vee Michaels, a senior Promise Scholar studying Biotechnology, has been thriving as a QC2 Lab Technician since September. Despite no previous lab experience, and doubting her ability to step into the lab environment, Vee took the leap, knowing this opportunity was essential to getting her foot in the door.

The Quality Control Collaboratory (QC2) of the University of Southern Maine, in partnership with the Maine Brewers’ Guild, provides laboratory analysis and testing for the craft beverage industry, while providing authentic lab experience and research opportunities for USM undergraduate students.

Vee shared, “I grew more comfortable as a lab tech, especially once I learned the standards of procedures and had the opportunity to take part in a few experiments. I’ve learned some fundamental skills that will definitely help in my future career in Biotech.”

Vee’s advice? “Don’t be shy, just go for it. You never know what you are capable of until you try.”

If you’re considering summer opportunities, the might just be the perfect chance to get your foot in the door! 🍻✨ They are offering **six internships starting in May! Dive into the world of brewing science. Whether you’re passionate about biotechnology, quality control, or just eager to learn, this could be the opportunity for you!

🌟 Promise Scholars Volunteer at Maine Needs!

We are proud to share our experience volunteering with an incredible organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families throughout our state. They provide essential resources like donated clothing, hygiene products, and household items, with a special focus on assisting newly arrived immigrant families, individuals escaping domestic abuse, those transitioning out of incarceration, and people experiencing homelessness or newly housed.
