Members of the GWEP had the pleasure of joining the Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter in Augusta last week in honor of Maine's State Alzheimer's Advocacy Day.

Each organization present did a phenomenal job in underscoring the importance of engaging state leaders in efforts to better the lives of people living with Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias and their caregivers.

Thank you to all who were able to attend Dr. Susan Wehry's talks in the past couple weeks!

At the York County Elder Abuse Task Force's Annual Conference, Dr. Wehry gave a riveting presentation on the risks and protective factors of elder abuse for people living with cognitive decline, and provided methods for how we can prevent elder abuse.

At the Maine Senior Guide's Successful Aging Expo, Dr. Wehry gave her state-wide talk, "Combatting Dementia Worry: Straight Talk About the Aging Brain," to discuss what the difference is between normal brain aging and what is a sign of cognitive decline, and what we can do to prevent it.

What do you see? What do you see when you look at me?

AgingME has modernized Phyllis McCormack's famous poem, "Crabbit Old Woman," and created this video to urge others to see individuals for not only who is in front of us, but for all of their life experiences that have shaped who they are.

TAKE ACTION: Share this video, include it in your newsletters, use it in new-hire orientations, employee trainings, or implement into curriculum for students. Join the movement to truly see the individuals we serve!

What is AgingME GWEP?

AgingME GWEP aims to create a more age-friendly health system by better preparing an age-capable workforce, transforming primary care practices and engaging and empowering older adults.

The Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) is a 5-year initiative that seeks to improve health outcomes for older adults. The University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNE COM), working in close collaboration with the University of Maine and multiple statewide partners, was one of 48 organizations nationally to receive this funding through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Maine’s GWEP is known as AgingME.
