Mental health conversations typically focus on teens or adults, but at the College of Education, we’re looking at babies and toddlers too. 👶✨

Yesterday on OPB’s "Think Out Loud," Assistant Professor Sally Guyon and PSU alumna and early intervention specialist Melissa Williams discussed our Infant/Toddler Mental Health graduate certificate program. They shared how training specialists to foster early, loving connections builds the neural foundation for a child's emotional resilience and lifelong success.

We are so proud of the work these two are doing to support our community's youngest members.

A big thank you to Early PR for helping connect us with this opportunity to advocate for early childhood education!

“Stay in your lane and articulate in your excellence.”

We are honoring the memory of LaShawanta (Taye) Spears, Deputy Superintendent of DEI for David Douglas School District, who passed away on April 15th.

In her 2025 Commencement address, Ms. Taye challenged our College of Education graduates to lean into their "unique brilliance." We hope her words continue to serve as a compass for all educators dedicated to uplifting their communities. Rest in power, Ms. Taye. 🕊️

We hold her family, friends, and colleagues in our thoughts as we celebrate her remarkable life and leadership.

🎉 Huge congratulations to Professor Julie Esparza Brown, who has received Portland State’s highest honor for senior faculty: the 2026 Presidential Career Research Award!

A visionary leader for multilingual equity, Julie has spent over four decades ensuring that a student’s heritage language is viewed as an asset rather than a deficit. Her pioneering work at the intersection of multilingualism and disability—including the development of the PLUSS Framework—has fundamentally changed how educators support diverse learners and prevent the over-identification of students in special education.

We are so proud to celebrate her lifelong commitment to creating more inclusive classrooms!

All PSU Research Award winners will be celebrated on campus on May 8.
