Portland State University Opera

Portland State University Opera Portland State University has a 50 year tradition of opera productions. It is the only university in Oregon that produces a full opera with orchestra each year.

This unique opera program provides undergraduates and graduates with the opportunity to experience every aspect of preparation and performance of an opera role. In opera workshop and opera productions students learn how to work with a stage director and conductor, how to work with costumes, props and to sing with an orchestra. Each year, an opera is chosen that best represents the talents and skil

ls of the students in the Department of Music. The operas are double cast whenever possible to provide more students with an experience that is invaluable to young performers as they prepare to audition for graduate schools, young artist programs and to begin their careers. The Jeannine B. Cowles Distinguished Professorship brings internationally recognized artists such as Marilyn Horne, Sherrill Milnes, Martina Arroyo, Maestro Stephen Crawford and stage director Tito Capobianco to Portland State University each year to share their expert knowledge and understanding with the students as they prepare the opera.

This year Portland State University Opera will present A Midsummer Night's Dream by Benjamin Britten for its spring production. Performance dates are April 26 & 29 at 7:30 PM, May 2 & 3 at 7:30 PM, and April 27 at 3:00 PM.

A Midsummer Night's Dream is the most beguiling and enchanting of all Benjamin Britten's operas. It is the collision of three groups: the fairy king and queen quarreling over a servant child, the lost and desperate lovers, and the comedic rustics who create their own version of opera buffa. One of the most successful adaptations of a Shakespeare play, A Midsummer Night's Dream is a work with spellbinding atmosphere that inhabits a truly unique dreamlike world.

Performances are at the Lincoln Performance Hall, 1620 SW Park Ave in Portland. David Edwards returns as Stage Director for the production and as the 2014 Jeannine B. Cowles Distinguished Professor of Opera.

For questions or to purchase tickets call 503-725-3307. You can select your own seats on line by going to our website at www.pdx.edu/boxoffice/tickets. Free with your ticket purchase is a pre-performance lecture with Bob Kingston one hour before each performance.

We look forward to seeing you this year!
