Futurisms: Envisioning a Better World for EveryBody
Presented by: Radical Education PSU
Join us for a series of workshops, panels, art and performances from May 11th to May 20th. All events are open to the public and community and are free to attend.

SubMedia NW Media Mash-Up Tour PSU Event
When: May 11th, 2018.
Workshop 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m.
Public screening 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
Location: Portland State University, Smith Memorial Student Union 026
Submedia’s founder Franklin Lopez will be leading film screenings and video workshops with various student and community groups in Portland. He will be presenting various films from Submedia’s past and present including recent episodes of the acclaimed monthly documentary series Trouble. In Portland and Olympia a few aspiring radical video makers will get a crash course in making their own fast turn around video reports in Submedia’s Chop Chop Video Making workshop.
Pedagogy Futurisms: Transformative Justice
When: May 14th, 2018, Time: 6:30pm-8pm.
Location: Portland State University, Smith Memorial Student Union Building, in Room 294.
Anna Vo will be presenting on transformative and restorative justice as they are alternatives to suspension, expulsion, criminalization and the school-to-prison pipeline. Community accountability and transformative justice are models of a society without state control and state militarization. This provides knowledge, information and tools for conflict resolution and mediation for organizing, professional and educational settings. This allows people to see past the traditional models of exclusion (i.e. prison) and authoritarian punishment.
Historical Political Perspectives: Looking to the past for a better future
When: May 17th,2018. Time: 6pm-9pm
Location: Portland State University, Cramer Hall, in Room 271
This panel discussion with The Institute for Anarchist Studies, Jamila Osman, and Victor Puertas will give historical and cultural perspectives of political models and movements that are non-hierarchical and non-oppressive based, what are the strengths and weaknesses? Attempting to answer the question-what can we learn from these movements? How can we move forward?
Futurisms Film Symposium; "Lalibela"
When: May 18th, 2018
Time: 5pm-9pm
Location: Portland State University, Smith Memorial Student Union Building, in Room 296/8 (three rooms combined).
"Lalibela," a speculative history of time-travel, as we work towards a futurism that is not disconnected from the past, but is stronger because of it. This event will feature a documentary film by Kelly Baur called Zuguleaiñ: we will speak. It explores the struggle of the indigenous Mapuche people in revitalizing their language, Mapuzugun and the complexities of Mapuche identity in contemporary Chilean society. This film will be followed by a presentation by Jermayne Tuckta about their work on revitalizing the Ichishkin language in Warm Springs and Portland and a discussion with speakers and artists Gabriel Teodros and Danica Brown on language and decolonization.
Futurisms: Envisioning a Better World for EveryBody

Time: 10am-6pm
Location: Portland State University, Parkway North (Smith Memorial Student Union Room 101).
Join us for a day of workshops, performances, and collective vision building. Gabriel Teodros, Victor Puertas, Trevino Brings Plenty, Cory Lira, Max Oanad, Kara Messersmith-Glavin, Wheel Chair Sports Camp and MBAC will be facilitating workshops in African and Native Indigenous, Q***r, EverBody, and Children's futurism, to envision a better world for EveryBody. Artist Maryanna Hoggatt will be creating a mural. Come envision a better world together. Lunch provided! Children welcome, please email us so we know how many children will be attending. Youth Incarceration and Music Empowerment
When: May 20th, 2018.
Time: 1pm-3pm
Location: Portland State University. Native American Student Center (Room 110)
This panel will feature speakers, presentations and performances by highly regarded Hip Hop artists based in the Pacific Northwest working with incarcerated youth in Oregon. Presenters will discuss the scope and importance of music programming and how music can transform lives and communities.
