Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM)

Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM) OCOM is ranked the best acupuncture college in the nation. In 2012, OCOM relocated to the historic Old Town Chinatown neighborhood.

Founded in 1983, Oregon College of Oriental Medicine’s mission is to transform health care by educating highly skilled and compassionate practitioners, providing exemplary patient care, and engaging in innovative research within a community of service and healing. OCOM's primary activities are providing studies for specialized graduate degrees; running two teaching clinics, providing affordable ca

re for patients – many with severe and unresolved health issues – and hands on experience for student interns; and conducting acupuncture and Chinese medicine research. OCOM is a single purpose professional graduate school that offers two specialized degree programs: Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MAcOM) and Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM). Repeatedly ranked the best acupuncture school in the US, OCOM's academic programs provide students with a solid foundation in acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, therapeutic massage, and qi cultivation, as well as a focus on collaboration between Chinese medicine and Western biomedicine. The current campus, a LEED Gold certified remodel of the former Globe Hotel building, places OCOM in the center of Portland, providing multiple opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to partner with and serve the community. OCOM operates two clinics, one at its main campus in Old Town Chinatown, and a satellite campus in the Hollywood neighborhood. Both focus on student interns (under the supervision of licensed clinic supervisors) providing low-cost acupuncture and Chinese medicine treatments to the public. Last year, OCOM provided 18,338 treatments to 2,946 unique patients. 64.36% of the patients seen at OCOM's clinics are low-income; most are from the Portland metropolitan area, but are otherwise quite diverse (e.g., gender, age, race, medical condition). OCOM is one of the longest standing colleges of acupuncture and Chinese medicine in the United States. To date, OCOM has graduated more than 1,450 students, and currently has alumni practicing in all 50 states, as well as six other countries. Cumulatively, OCOM graduates have provided an estimated 10 million patient visits.

Two years, three months, and sixteen days ago, I started working at OCOM. While we’ve had many rounds of goodbyes recently, today felt the heaviest. There aren’t words to express how much I will miss our students, staff and faculty—so if I’ve tried to force food upon you in the last few weeks, please know that you are so special to me.

For today’s giveaway on campus, I brought in a lot of my own crystals and rocks to give away to our community. I’d like to think that a little part of me is with you, wishing you all of the best as you continue your journey.

I hope that you want to stay connected (I’m in the OCOM Alumni Facebook group!). It has been an honor and a privilege to have been a part of this magnificent history.

For those of you wondering about the yearbooks—they are arriving VERY SOON and I’ll let you know when I’ll be on campus for you to pick them up! They must be picked up by September 30th (my last official day).

With gratitude,
Marilyn

Thank you for all your support throughout my time at OCOM. I aspire to be as inspiring a representative of our profession as all of you who have generously dedicated yourself to Acupuncture and Chinese medicine education. As my first step in the process of taking this training out into the world, I am excited to embark on a journey to Nepal to volunteer in a rural health clinic with the Acupuncture Relief Project in November and December. To learn more about my personal motivation and goals for serving in Nepal and integrating this experience into my future practice, see the link below to my GoFundMe.

You have all offered so much and it is my great hope that I can continue the cycle of generosity and support in the realms of education and patient-centered care. I am excited to share updates and stories of my volunteer endeavor on Facebook and through Instagram (@ Aralia_the_Alchemist). You are welcome to join the virtual journey!

Thanks for all your knowledge and support!
Dr. Jenn McCoy, DACM

Acupuncture needles are very very thin—they’re roughly ten times smaller than a medical syringe, and roughly two times larger than a human hair!

OCOM’s clinic will be open through August. Help our student interns hone their craft by scheduling an acupuncture, shiatsu, or herbal consultation appointment today! $25-45 per appointment, and sliding scale fees are available to those who qualify.
