Big congratulations to Craig Fairbaugh (BSENVE '15), whose work with Contech Engineered Solutions netted them top honors in Storm Water Solutions Top National Storm Water Projects of 2019! Contech worked with Kitsap County, Washington Public Works Department to turn a vacant former trailer park into "Whispering Firs", a multi-function and multi-benefit regional storm water retrofit facility that uses green treatment techniques to treat runoff. Read more about Whispering Firs, and other top storm water projects of the last year, HERE -->

Wondering what we've been up to this past year at CEE? Curious about the status of our faculty's world-changing research, our brilliant students' accomplishments, and new horizons for our dedicated staff? All that and more can be found in our Fall 2019 newsletter!

Dear CEE Alumni and Friends: It has been a while since we updated you on our recent accomplishments - we hope you missed us! As part of our effort to be more connected with alumni and friends, we are planning to produce this brief e-newsletter at least once a year. The 2019-2020 academic year is off...

Portland State University Civil & Environmental Engineering professors Arash Khosravifar and Diane Moug, along with their geotechnical engineering graduate students and collaborators from The University of Texas at Austin, have been conducting field research for the last several weeks on ways to mitigate soil liquefaction ("soupy" soil) when the Big One hits! By injecting the soil with bacteria and then simulating an earthquake with a large machine lovingly dubbed "T Rex", our researchers use above-ground sensors to measure the changes beneath the surface - and hopefully, keep the soil sturdy enough to avoid major fuel spills into the Willamette and Columbia in the case of a real earthquake event. Check out the video below!

Because Oregon is so close to the Columbia and Willamette, we are especially prone to liquefication, researchers say.

Sending all our best wishes and luck to American Society of Civil Engineers at Portland State University (PSU ASCE) who are competing at St. Martin's University in Lacey, WA this weekend for the The American Society of Civil Engineers / American Institute of Steel Construction Regional Student Competition! They're assembling steel bridges, floating concrete canoes, designing sustainable doghouses, testing environmental filters, and presenting technical papers to hundreds of their peers throughout the weekend. GOOD LUCK ASCE! A lot of blood, sweat, tears, and overall hard work went into this moment for you, and your Department couldn't be more proud!

A round of applause for our newest PhDs!

Ramin Familkhalili, Anwer Mohammed, and Wisam Aules successfully defended their respective dissertations this term, covering topics from the behavior of non-ductile concrete columns and screen grid core insulated concrete form walls, to the effect of hydrodynamic changes on tides and storm surge.

Congratulations Ramin, Anwer, and Wisam! We are so proud of everything you bring to our program, to Portland State University, and to the profession of civil engineering.
