September 15th marks the first day of the month long recognition and celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month which ends on October 15th. Throughout the month we reflect on, honor, and celebrate the contributions of the many different groups of people with Hispanic heritage including peoples from Spain, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.
Hispanic Heritage Month as we know it began in 1968 with the Johnson administration and ran for only a week until the Reagan administration extended it to a month long observance. Often confused with Cinco de Mayo, Mexico's Independence Day actually takes place on Sept. 16th followed closely by Chilean Independence Day on the 18th. It's important to note here that these independence celebrations are to recognize hard fought and one freedom from colonizing countries.
Some familiar figures you might know are Dolores Huerta, Gwen Ifill, Cesar Chávez, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sylvia Rivera Esperanza Spalding, Cardi B, Zoe Saldana, Rosario Dawson, Rep. Andrea Valderrama of HD 47, Rep. Teresa Alonso León, and Candace Avalos who is the current executive director of Verde] and former coordinator for student government!
The terms "Hispanic" and "Latino/a/x" are not interchangeable. There is a large diversity of how different groups of people celebrate Hispanic History Month, and it's a good time to practice self care and cultural appreciation and/or research and learn more about the ongoing issues Hispanic and Latino/a/x people face in the US and abroad.
How are you celebrating ? Let us know in the comments! ✨
Be sure to follow and support these awesome orgs + groups throughout the month and always!
