✨ Join Portland State in Commemorating ✨

September 15th marks the first day of the month long recognition and celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month which ends on October 15th. Throughout the month we reflect on, honor, and celebrate the contributions of the many different groups of people with Hispanic heritage including peoples from Spain, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

Hispanic Heritage Month as we know it began in 1968 with the Johnson administration and ran for only a week until the Reagan administration extended it to a month long observance. Often confused with Cinco de Mayo, Mexico's Independence Day actually takes place on Sept. 16th followed closely by Chilean Independence Day on the 18th. It's important to note here that these independence celebrations are to recognize hard fought and one freedom from colonizing countries.

Some familiar figures you might know are Dolores Huerta, Gwen Ifill, Cesar Chávez, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sylvia Rivera Esperanza Spalding, Cardi B, Zoe Saldana, Rosario Dawson, Rep. Andrea Valderrama of HD 47, Rep. Teresa Alonso León, and Candace Avalos who is the current executive director of Verde] and former coordinator for student government!

The terms "Hispanic" and "Latino/a/x" are not interchangeable. There is a large diversity of how different groups of people celebrate Hispanic History Month, and it's a good time to practice self care and cultural appreciation and/or research and learn more about the ongoing issues Hispanic and Latino/a/x people face in the US and abroad.

How are you celebrating ? Let us know in the comments! ✨

Be sure to follow and support these awesome orgs + groups throughout the month and always!

The Division of Global Diversity & Inclusion (GDI) is excited to welcome Dr. Lindsay Romasanta (she/her/siya) as Assistant Vice President of Global Diversity & Inclusion, joined our team on July 12th. Dr. Romasanta brings to this position over a decade of extensive experience and progressive leadership to advance student success efforts, with a focus on underrepresented populations. She most recently served as the Director of Student Success Programs at UC San Diego. She also serves as the inaugural co-editor of NASPA's Journal of First-Generation Student Success. More information about Lindsay can be found in her resume.

Lindsay will oversee with the Disability Resource Center, Native American Student and Community Center, the Veterans Resource Center, and Student Legal Services, partnering with Perla Pinedo, who oversees the Cultural Resource Centers, Multicultural Retention Services, TRIO Student Support Services and TRIO Pre-College Programs. Lindsay will also be a critical partner with GDI Vice President Ame Lambert in advancing our institutional equity and justice efforts.

"Dr. Romasanta is a proud Pilipina, low-income, first-generation college graduate. Like many first-generation college students, she stumbled upon her professional passion of choice — higher education — by chance. Since that discovery, she has dedicated her professional and scholarly work helping college students achieve their dreams of higher education."

Open for Fall. Open for All. A COVID-19 Update!

We know that COVID-19 upended your lives and disrupted your education. You've stuck with it, despite all the obstacles. You’re ready for change, and so are we. Now is the time create a new way forward, together.

Summer Term 2021:
Nearly all PSU classes will remain remote for Summer 2021. However, the campus is open - with new safety measures - to provide student support.

Fall Term 2021:
This Fall, PSU is reopening safely for in-person classes, and we are looking forward to seeing you all again soon! To protect your health and well-being, PSU has implemented a number of rigorous safety measures including nearly 1,600 new upgraded filters and HVAC systems, increased cleaning at all touchpoint stations, hand sanitizer dispensers will continue to be installed and replenished. Additionally, all students attending classes on our downtown Portland campus in Fall 2021 will be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. PSU's Center for Student Health and Counseling () is an approved vaccination site and we are actively encouraging vaccinations and working to facilitate access. We will continue to work with our public health partners and follow their guidance on mask-wearing and physical distancing to make our campus as safe as possible.

“It’s been a whirlwind of a year for social change!

If you’ve been following along, or perhaps you even participated, then you will remember the 2020 T:me to Act Fall Equity Summit and the subsequent T:me to Act Winter Symposium. These two events supplied us valuable information regarding the inequity and struggles faced by our most vulnerable populations on campus. President Stephen Percy and Vice President Ame Lambert convened five cross-campus task groups and developed a learning and action agenda to make our vision for a racially just and equitable future a reality at Portland State. The five task forces took this information and proposed a series of recommendations to address these concerns. The recommendations have led to tangle measurable steps which, when implemented, will work to eradicate persistent and structural racism on campus. It is our goal to usher in success for all students, create more equitable working conditions, and sustain an environment where people feel safe, belong, and prosper.

We are committed to follow this up with action, and we must hold each other accountable. This upcoming academic year we will be embarking on the implementation stage of these recommendations. Prioritized recommendations will qualify for funding through the Racial Equity Fund - $1.5 million over three years - for investments to advance student retention and success, nurture en empowering climate for BIPOC employees, and support the development and deployment of an anti-racist lens.

While these recommendations are too lengthy to type here, we encourage you to review them and share your thoughts via the feedback forms in each task force. Go to pdx.edu/diversity/equity-and-justice, or click the link in our bio for more information.” Thank you for your willingness to make meaningful change, and thank you for your commitment to equity at PSU.
