From the moment Concordia Portland’s doors opened in 1905 to the moment they will close in 2020, our mission has remained constant: we are a Christian university preparing leaders for the transformation of society. Whether it was through our human sciences, business, education programs, law school, athletics, and 3 to PhD, we have done this within a community that is motivating, evolving, and inclusive; all while being rooted in our school motto: Christi Crux Est Mihi Lux --The Cross of Christ is Light to Me.

As we prepare to go our separate ways, the staff and faculty of Concordia University-Portland want to express our immense gratitude to each and every member of our community, past and present. We especially want to thank our alumni, each a vital thread in the tapestry of Concordia’s 115-year legacy. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your educational journey. Thank you for serving alongside us, learning with us, and giving your heart to the pursuit and fulfillment of your calling. Thank you for taking on the mantle of becoming a Concordia student, telling us, yourself, and the world that you believe education can move molehills and mountains — and that both are vitally important feats.

While the path of the past few months has been difficult, we will cherish the memories, the growth, and the impact that Concordia has had. We move towards the future faithfully, confident that our students are our legacy. We will never forget you.

“The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the joy that is to come.” –Romans 8:18

May God go with you always.

In 2 weeks we will share a final, virtual farewell to the campus so many of us have loved.
As we continue to follow the state's guidelines regarding COVID-19 and large gatherings, the June 28th Closing Ceremony will be a virtual event instead of an in-person gathering.
For the Closing Celebration we will stream a pre-recorded video. To participate, tune into Concordia's page, YouTube Channel, or cu-portland.edu/live on June 28th at 4:00 pm to view the event and connect with others in the Concordia community, virtually.
We still seek to make this a meaningful opportunity to reflect and commemorate Concordia's legacy as it features student, alumni and community speakers and a Closing Ceremony led by Pastor Bo Baumeister. We hope you will join us.

Our seventh Athletic Award is presented to an athlete who exhausts eligibility and recognizes outstanding achievements as they reflect the mission of the university – preparing leaders for the transformation of society. The Cavalier Award goes to Katrina Linenko! Congrats, Katrina!

Cavalier Award - Katrina Linenko, Track & Field

Katrina helped CU’s women’s track and field team claim the 2019-20 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championships team title, as her winning throw in the shot put nudged the Cavaliers ahead of second-place Seattle Pacific at the end of the meet. It was Katrina’s third GNAC individual title in her career, and she was subsequently selected as a United States Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association all-west region honoree for the second time in her career. Katrina is a seven-time all-conference performer, and a three-time academic all-GNAC selection as well.

Our next two Athletic Awards go to two student athletics who not only excelled on the field and on the track, but also in the classroom. The Scholar-Athlete of the Year award goes to Hannah Self, Softball and Adam Brown, Track & Field!

Scholar-Athlete of the Year - Hannah Self, Softball (not pictured)

The female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, presented to senior athletes who maintain a GPA of at least 3.5 and are a key contributor on their team, is Hannah Self. Hannah held a 3.95 GPA while completing her degree in nursing, which was the second-highest mark of any player selected to the academic all-GNAC softball team. In just 18 games this spring, Hannah swatted six home runs and drove in 19 while slugging .828. She led the team with a .431 batting average, while reaching base at a clip of .470 and scoring 16 runs.

Scholar-Athlete of the Year - Adam Brown, Track & Field

The male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, presented to senior athletes who maintain a GPA of at least 3.5 and are a key contributor on their team, is Adam Brown. Adam took the top academic honor on the men’s side with a 3.93 GPA while studying chemistry. After initially planning to redshirt during the indoor season, Brown activated his eligibility in time for the GNAC Indoor Championships and helped lead the Cavalier men to a second-place team finish. He took second in the conference in both the 60 meters – in 7.05 seconds, and in the 200 meters – in 21.80 seconds. That was good enough to bring his USTFCCCA career all-region count to four, he is a seven-time all-conference performer, and this spring will be a three-time academic all-conference selection.

The next round of CUP Athletic Awards go to two student athletics who took our university mission to heart as they competed and presented themselves on and off campus. The Athletic Servant Leader of the Year award goes to Elyssa Rose, Volleyball and Jaxson Daskalos, Men's Golf!

Athletic Servant Leader of the Year - Elyssa Rose, Volleyball (not pictured)
The female Athletic Servant Leader of the Year, presented to the student-athletes who best exemplify Concordia’s mission through community activism, volunteerism, and campus involvement is Elyssa Rose. Standing out as a leader on the court, Elyssa led the team in blocking with 106 total denials as well as 13 solo blocks during her junior season. She was also one of the top attackers with 1.36 kills per set, and she started 26 of 27 games on the season. Rose earned GNAC Player of the Week honors for the second straight year and nabbed her first-career GNAC Player of the Week award on Oct. 6.

Athletic Servant Leader of the Year - Jaxson Daskalos, Men's Golf
The male Athletic Servant Leader of the Year, presented to the student-athletes who best exemplify Concordia’s mission through community activism, volunteerism, and campus involvement is Jaxon Daskalos. Jaxon finished the season ranked third in the GNAC with a scoring average of 72.0 strokes per round, while helping the Cavaliers to the second-lowest team average in the league at 289.7 strokes per round. Jaxon made par or better in eight of his 15 rounds on the season, including three times reaching his season-low score of 67 in a single round. The highlight of his year came when he helped the Cavaliers to the team title at the 18-team Western Washington University Invitational on September 24 in Bellingham, Washington.

04/24/2020

The Concordia University Athletic Department and Athletic Director Matthew Martin would like to honor seven outstanding student-athlete graduates for their hard work and resilience throughout their athletic careers.

Our first two honorees’ performance on the green and on the turf made several GNAC headlines and both proved to be pivotal assets to their athletic programs. Please give a round of applause to Cammie Decker, Women's Golf and Nick Denley, Men's Soccer as they are presented with the Student-Athlete of the Year award. Congratulations, Cammie and Nick!

Student-Athlete of the Year - Cammie Decker, Women's Golf
The female athlete of the year, presented to the top-performing female in the department, is senior Cammie Decker of the women’s golf team. Cammie is the two-time reigning GNAC Player of the Year, and finished her final campaign tied for the lowest scoring average in the GNAC at 73.9 strokes per round. Cammie’s year was highlighted by winning the Concordia University Invitational on October 8, and the Dennis Rose Invitational on October 30 during the fall campaign. She is an eight-time GNAC Player of the Week selection, and she set the GNAC single-round record with a 68 during her winning performance at the Dennis Rose Invitational last fall.

Student-Athlete of the Year - Nick Denley, Men's Soccer
The male athlete of the year, presented to the top-performing male in the department, is sophomore Nicholas Denley of the men’s soccer team. Nick was a first-team all-GNAC and third-team United Soccer Coaches all-region selection after the completion of the 2019 fall season. He led the Cavaliers in scoring with nine goals and one assist, for 19 total points. He was 1 of 2 CU players to start all 17 games, and he led the team in minutes played with 1,512, shots with 32, shots on goal with 17, and game-winning goals with three.

CUP’s tenth School of Management honoree and recipient of the Global Studies and Culture Graduate of the Year award goes to Grace Aklestad! Congrats, Grace! !

“Grace is consistently the most prepared and engaged student in our classes. Her commitment to the Concordia community runs deep. She has served as Social Change Coordinator for the Office of Service Leadership and as First Chair Flute in the Concordia Wind Ensemble. She has also held multiple administrative roles on campus and has been an active and beloved member of the Honors Program. Grace exemplifies the kind of leader that Concordia University has sought to produce to transform society—one who is as driven as they are socially conscious and compassionate. It is quite fitting that Grace Aklestad is our final Graduate of the Year.” - Dr. Kimberly Knutsen, Professor of English
