UNE faculty, staff, and IPSG leadership representing OT, PA, Nursing, Pharmacy and Osteopathic Medicine helped CAIEP introduce collaborative team skills to UNE's newest cohort of OT, Nursing and PA earlier this week at Portland Campus Orientation!

During each session, these health professions students were mixed in interprofessional groups and had to lean on IP competencies (Roles & Responsibilities, Communication, Values & Ethics, Teamwork) to assemble a tower collaboratively – and quickly! – with limited access to resources.

In addition to the 'Order from Chaos' team-building exercise, each presenter spoke about their scope of practice and opportunities to become involved in collaborative co-curricular programming at UNE, including interprofessional: simulation, anatomy, student group (IPSG), geriatric education (IGEP), team immersion (IPTI), and more.

CAIEP is grateful to UNE's IP Champion presenters: Erin McCall, IPSG president/osteopathic medical student Maddie Richard, Nancy Jo Ross, MacKenzie Towns, Kerry Martin, Mike Lawrence, IPSG member/Physician Assistant student Luke Hayner.

CONGRATULATIONS Becca Haas and Gayle Chung!

This year, CAIEP created a student award named for CAIEP's founding director Shelley Cohen Konrad - the Interprofessional 'All of Us' Student Award

University of New England UNE Center to Advance Interprofessional Education and Practice recognizes Haas (Doctor of Dental Medicine student) and Chung (Doctor of Physical Therapy student) for this inaugural award, as both have been exceptionally engaged with IPE activities and participated enthusiastically in CAIEP programming far beyond their IP Honors expectations and requirements, for the mere fun of it. They each facilitated numerous interprofessional breakout conversations, participated in in-person IPE brainstorm sessions, and helped meaningfully inform collaborative programming at UNE from each their perspective as a student, because team skills help clinically prepare future providers.

They received their awards in person earlier this week, and will be invited to share remarks at the Interprofessional Student Showcase April 29 at 12 ET (All are welcome: https://bit.ly/Showcase_0429 )

Toward the end of each academic year, CAIEP recognizes an individual or team who demonstrates strong interprofessional skills and collaborative efforts at UNE by honoring them with an award named for M. Lisa Pagnucco, a former Pharmacy faculty member at UNE who truly led great efforts in IP education.

This year, CAIEP recognizes Associate Director of Student Life Chris McCarry – a member of UNE professional staff who has truly been intentionally mindful of helping make the newly 'reimagined' Portland Campus a welcoming place for all students, offering and supporting programming that is inclusive to all, managing activities via student groups, and more. This sets the foundation for collaboration and belonging in future clinical settings.

Our CAIEP team has seen interprofessional student connections form as a result, which helps make our job a little easier!

Thank you, Chris!

UNE CAIEP is truly grateful for our interprofessional champions and collaborators across Portland Campus and Online graduate programs, especially as we wrap up a first big year together on the newly reimagined campus for the Health Sciences. (We have terrific allies on Biddeford Campus too – That's another post to come!)
CAIEP's collaborative efforts behind the scenes are only made possible with allied UNE faculty and staff mentors like these who help bring students intentionally together to learn about, from and with one another.
Clinical collaboration in action all starts here!
Each of these remarkable individuals has played a role within one – or more! – scope of interprofessional education, including: co-curricular design, simulation, faculty mentorship, service learning, anatomy courses, student activities, event panel presentation, AV event production, conference participation, team immersion, career services, advising, and so much more, weaving together a strong fabric of collaboration because they model the mindset that prepares students for clinical team-based care.

Congratulations, Andrea Stemm, P.A, '23! Andrea, a recipient of both the UNE Interprofessional and CUP AHEC Scholars Honors Distinctions as a student, has truly continued with collaborative skills in clinical practice and is featured in a recent News Center Maine story related to a new Rural Opioid Response Program Grant received by UNE of which AHEC is a part.

"I was drawn to rural medicine because there is a huge difference to be made", said Stemm, who works on interprofessional care teams with doctors, nurses, other staff, "Any training in the academic setting can help reduce stigma and lead to prompt referrals to the medication-assisted treatment here."
