From the start of her time at Lewis & Clark, Abby Burke BA '26 was interested in a little bit of everything. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the liberal arts, she was able to connect policy, research, and environmental issues in unexpected ways.

Now, after an internship with the Oregon Environmental Council, she's using her experience at L&C to chart her career path! Check out how her international affairs major, data science minor, and variety of interests in and out of the classroom got her to where she is today. ⬇️

Before a spring women’s lacrosse game in Griswold Stadium, a different form of connection happened on the field. The announcer read a short statement over the intercom, acknowledging the Indigenous origins of lacrosse. “Lacrosse is a Native Game” was printed on a banner that faced spectators.

The competitors circled up, teams intermingled, and athletes passed around a traditional lacrosse stick. It was a quiet moment to reflect on where the game began.

JD Elquist, founder and executive director of PNW Native Lacrosse, guided the pregame ritual, offering a traditional sage smudging ceremony for students who requested it. His nonprofit began working to return lacrosse to its Native origins, often overlooked and misappropriated, in 2023.

The verbal acknowledgment, called “Respect the Roots,” is now an official practice of the Premier Lacrosse League, the sport’s professional organization. In spring 2025, Lewis & Clark was the first adopter.

On a chilly afternoon last fall, seven Lewis & Clark students traveled across the Willamette River to Alder Elementary School in Southeast Portland, where eager third-graders were waiting to meet them.

The students, all of whom were enrolled in SPAN 301H: Spanish for Heritage Speakers, were there to share what college life is like at Lewis & Clark. The visit grew out of a partnership with Greater Than, a local nonprofit that works to remove educational barriers for underrepresented and marginalized students in the Portland area.

In April, the partnership came full circle when the Alder third-graders visited Lewis & Clark’s campus! Read the story in our newsroom through the link below.

For Carlos Sanchez Huizar BA ’18, MA ’20, each day has always started and ended with una tazita de cafe—a cup of coffee. There was coffee before the sun rose, when his parents left for work in the early morning darkness. There was coffee at crowded kitchen tables passed between friends and family alongside pan dulce.

Now, years later, those same rituals have taken shape in Kilo D’ Cofi, a Latinx-owned coffee shop in downtown Portland, cofounded by Sanchez Huizar and his wife, Selene Contreras-Sanchez. The couple has brought Mexican coffee culture to the Pacific Northwest while establishing a place where community and identity feel at home.
