WHAT IS TANGO FOR MUSICIANS AT REED COLLEGE? We are the official North American affiliate of the Buenos Aires-based tango education workshop Tango Para Músicos. Tango For Musicians at Reed College combines the experience and expertise of the Tango Para Músicos team with the uncompromising commitment to educational excellence and student achievement that defines Reed College, one of the United Stat
es’ most elite liberal arts colleges. You can expect personalized attention from our artistic faculty, world-class facilities for all educational activities, and an institutional environment that is absolutely focused on the mission—and pleasure—of learning tango music together. WHEN IS IT HELD? Tango For Musicians at Reed College's 2016 will be held between June 19-26 in Portland, Oregon, and will feature for registered participants a whole week of lessons and masterclasses on instrumental techniques, ensembles, arranging, composition, 'parrilla' (tango improvisation), history of tango, tango styles and fundamentals and a mini-festival of concert performances open to the public featuring our outstanding artistic faculty in various combinations. WHO IS IT FOR? Tango For Musicians at Reed College is open to musicians on any instrument. Previous experience with tango is not necessary or expected, though technical proficiency on your instrument and the ability to read music are required. Pre-formed tango ensembles are welcome and will have the chance to work on their specific repertory with the artistic faculty. All instruction and educational materials will be presented in English. WHAT WILL WE LEARN? Tango For Musicians at Reed College will provide the tools needed to play, arrange, compose, improvise, and teach tango music. All students will participate in instrumental techniques classes tiered to different levels of experience and have the chance to play and perform with student ensembles. New for 2016, we are designing a diverse offering of specialized masterclasses that students will be able to choose from according to their interests and abilities. Sessions will include focused workshops on tango composition and arranging, tango styles and history, and a wide array of other topics.
